Baun vs Chaisson

I’ve been surprised by Riddick’s lack of success as an NFL player.

Yea I was big on him coming out and he obviously hasn’t lived up to the selection. I don’t watch enough of him in the NFL to know why but he’s def underperformed.

The one thing I've learned from the Cowboys coaches is that you can't expect role-player creativity from them.

We've had many guys before who looked like they'd be good in sub-packages: Marty B as a killer in 12 sets, Pollard being a true changeup to Zeke, Jourdan Lewis as an Alvin Kamara killer, Heath was better deep than he was near the LOS - but the Cowboys coaches don't do that. Guys on this team either start and play a full load of snaps at one spot, or they ride the pine and get minimal usage.

I can see Baum succeeding in a Clay Matthews type outside/inside role, or like a Kyle Van Noy jack of all trades in Belichick's system, but until proven otherwise I think you have to evaluate Baun as a full time linebacker in LVE and Jaylon's spot. I really hope that this will change now that Garrett's gone, but in his 13 years here I got burned so many times by that Tavon Austin web back stuff that I just don't believe it any more.

Previously yes...I’m hoping the fact we video interviewed is at least changing that.

Definitely know what you mean. We had 10 years of a total lack of an imagination. How many years did they unsuccessfully try the 2-TE offense, lol.

That said, I’m giving this new regime a chance.

We’ll see.

For those saying Baun could play SAM in a 4-3, I just don't get it. He's at his best when he's rushing the passer. You are now asking him to fill the B gap and cover TE's or RB's. As far as his pass-rushing ability, the issue is going to be he'll facing NFL tackles each week who have 80 lbs and 4 inches on him. He's a good player but I would not take him at 17, especially for a 4-3 defense. You'd also be using your most valuable asset on a player who is likely sharing reps with Randy Gregory and Aldon Smith.

Now 2nd round? Sure, the risk is now worth the investment. You gamble on his talent and task the coaches to find a way to utilize his skillset.

I'm the Captain of the Edge argument, basically a 4-3 RDE and a 3-4 ROLB are the same player, but that argument loses credibility when the player is both shorter than the average Edge and weighs less than the average Edge. This isn't the TJ Watt debate again; Watt is 6'4" and 252 lbs. Dwight Freeney was only 6'1" but was 260 plus. Elvis Dumervil was that rare sub-6 footer, but he also weighed 250 plus and was drafted in the 4th round.

A 4-3 SLB only plays about 30% of the snaps...

If he couldn’t also impact the run and cover I’d agree and say the 1st is too early but he can. I posted numbers to back that up and the scouting
reports highlight his ability of NOT being a 1 trick pony. What your describing sounds like Weaver, who I might not even take in the 2nd for the same reasons.

He’s about the same size as Matthews was as a prospect, and he can easily get to 250+ with an NFL training/diet program so no concerns there.

And yes, he’ll be facing bigger OTs like every prospect in this draft will. Good thing is there’s tape of him winning against some of the best and he also comes in with the ability to already win in multiple ways.

Clay Matthews played in the Packers 3-4 as and OLB. Baun probably ends up being valued more by a 3-4 team.

What about Lewis in the 2nd instead of these two in the 1st. Similar production and injury history with Chaisson.

Baun can rush, play the run and cover at a very high level. If we're to be a 4-3 team and can't figure out how to fit him in shame on us.

I don’t think Braun would take too kindly calling him a her, lol.

I believe those were that are in favor of Baun are saying to play him at Sam on run downs and Edge on obvious passing downs.

I would hope that no one is dumb enough to suggest spending the 17th pick on a SAM backer.
