Change of pace thread !!!!! It's the offseason let's have some fun, but i am curious to see what decisions all you couch Gm's would make.

Scenario: You are the Gm of a new expansion team !!!

On Your Team Already is a shiny new #1 draft pick at QB ( Reason is this would be everyone's choice for Number 1 )

I am curious what positions would you focus your next 5 draft choices on in order of importance ----- their can be multiple picks at same position group or all on one side of the ball, how would you begin to build your team is up to you ? For the sake of argument assume all 5 choices would be 1st round draft choices ?

Explain your decisions if you want !

1) LT --- Cornerstone to Protect My Number 1 QB
2) DE --- Pass rush
3) MLB --- QB of my D
4) CB --- My Hope Shutdown one side of field
5) C --- QB of my Online

I would use 3 out of 5 in the trenches reason being on O i want my rookie QB protected well and having a top pick at LT and adding the Center with the 5th pick to make all the line calls and blocking protections. I did consider adding a 2nd D-line player instead of the center but since i went D rest of the way I decided to give my QB the added security.

DE, MLB and CB - I wanted a Playmaker at every level of the D bottom line

This is how i would start my team how about you ?

Left tackle
Then I do what it takes to complete the online.

In fact I might be inclined to build the oline before I take a qb to avoid a Carr/Texans fiasco.

Look what damage one Chaz Green on a line for one game can do.

DE
LT
DT
OG
Center

Building the trenches is how you win, depending on where the numbers are we are drafting I could walk away with these guys as rookies.......

Von Miller/Mack
Tyron Smith
Aaron Donald
Zach Martin
Travis Frederick

I didn't go by most important position in order, I wanted to maximize my picks instead of just taking the top 5 picks in a draft.

You can only put the positions in order of importance in theory without knowing exactly what players are available when you draft. You might value LT more than any other position, but if there was a great DE available when you draft that you had rated much higher than the best LT available, you take the DE.

LT
DE
C
MLB
WR

You need to protect the QB. LT and C do that.
You need to have someone to control a section of the defensive field. DL and MLB do that.
You need to get someone to catch the ball. WR.

Well thats my order of progression.

Obviously QB is job 1. Then start on the lines. Then work the perimeters - CBs and WRs. LBs and RBs are the easiest to find. Truly dynamic safeties are like unicorns, so unless you get a Berry or Thomas you save it for last.

LT
C
RT
LG
RG

If I am spending my first on a QB, I am giving him the best protection I can from the get go. He will never learn the position without the OL, see Andrew Luck. And I'd be back the next year to pick what OL I had missed on.

If I was able to fill any of those in FA, I would replace them with DT, MLB, DT, SS, FS.

Year 1 OL as other have mentioned
Year 2: RB/Wr and De/DT
Year 3: round out defense
Year 4: special teams draft

...It would be diff in FF...but in reality >

QB RB WR 4/3 RDE MLB all # 1s

I'm a 3-4 guy. My first pick is NT. 2nd is SS followed by weak side LB. QB and Center are my last two picks.
