Be careful judging Buehler's preseason kickoffs

I've read that some are disappointed that David Buehler only put 1 of 3 kickoffs (actually, a very good rate) into the end zone for a touchback on Thursday.

Considering that the Cowboys need to work on their kickoff coverage, it's not likely that Dallas would want Buehler to get a touchback on everyone of his kickoffs, even if he could do it.

We've got to see how the coverage team handles it when he doesn't get a touchback, so it wouldn't be surprising if he is told when to show his full leg strength and when to take something off the ball to allow for a return.

Now, I'm not saying Dallas did that because apparently the wind conditions at Oakland probably took care of that by itself, just that I wouldn't expect him to put it in the end zone on every kick in the preseason games even if he's able.

I know everyone wants to exalt the greatness that is Buehler on every kickoff, just don't be fooled into thinking what we see now is necessarily what we'll see later.

Wade never said that or implied that at all...

Wade talks kickoffs

He did sound like they were ok with the kickoffs not getting into the End Zone though because of the conditions.

Janikowski didn't get them into the End Zone either.

Plus, you never know which way the wind is going. Probably something announcers should bring up more in the game as I've seen the wind blow quite hard at games, but since it's not Meadowlands or Chicago blustery, they never really mention it. I have no idea what the wind was doing at Oakland, but I've been to Oakland/Bay Area quite a few times and it is usually pretty windy there when I've been there.

Prater kicked off four times. The first went to the 22, the second went nine yards deep, the third went to the 6, and the fourth was a failed onside kick.

When I saw his 1st KO come up short of the endzone I assumed the coaches had told him to take it easy. You could tell he didn't get full extension into his kick. You can only do walk thrus in practice when working on KO coverage. So, it's vital to give the guys some live fire during pre-season games by kicking short. I'll give him a pass until the season starts.

Just clarified this.

He said he never said this and it isn't on the blog anywhere.

Honest mistake I believe.

They are saying it was the wind. And he admitted he was nervous on the first one.

Maybe it as a different game, but seemed like more than one kick-off yesterday was boomed deep into the endzone.

Yeah, I'm not saying the coaches told him to or that he kicked them short on purpose, just that we need to keep in mind that Dallas needs to work on more than just having the kicker get touchbacks during the preseason (so we shouldn't jump to conclusions).

I'm sure that's not much of a problem since no kicker is 100 percent on touchbacks.

If that were true, wouldn't they just put Folk in there instead?

:D

Well, they need a true gauge of the kickoff coverage. Can't get that on low kicks to the 13.
