Yesterday STUNK!!!…

…for me.

Granted, that little measly tropical depression didn’t do much to the Gulf Coast over the weekend, or did it?

Coming off a Saturday evening 12-hour night shift, I woke up right as the first set of Sunday games were commencing. However, I kept getting frustrated as the heavy rain continued to knock out my DirecTV signal. I saw this as an omen.

Then, because I do not have any networks because DirecTV cannot get the local affiliates to sign a waiver, I am forced to go to the sports bar to see the NBC Cowboys-Bears game. So I go to the Imperial Palace Casino Sports Bar in Biloxi, MS. Sure enough, the Mobile, AL NBC affiliate gets knocked out. I then go over to one of the biker bars in Gulfport, and they are having technical difficulties with the New Orleans affiliate.

I CANNOT WIN FOR LOSING!!!

SO I NEVER SAW THE GAME….BLAHHHHH @&#$&^&*(r$$^$%

So how do I write an article on a game I have yet to see? The only way I can do this is to go on the testimonies of my best friend Niland76 (he and I have following the Cowboys together since 1974), Norm Hitgzes’ post-game show, and reading some of your posts. So I will do the best I can here.

The first thing I heard from both Norm and Niland’s mouths were the poor officiating. Norm ranted for about 10 minutes on his show about the last couple of seconds of the first half. Apparently Dallas should have had a play in Bear’s territory right before the half. Niland spoke of ticky-tack holding penalties on Adams and Witten, whereas Ware and Spencer got tackled a few times with no penalties. That’s enough with the officiating.

Dallas went on 4th down and 3 in the second quarter. This was good from several aspects. First of all, they were in no-mans land. Soldier field is renown for low field goal percentage, so why risk a high 50s FG attempt and possibly give the Bears great field position. Secondly, what message was sent to the Bears that, even in their house, that defense was not going to intimidate them?

I understand Patrick Crayton did a Jackie Smith? I blame it on the finger.

Looking at the play-by-play recap, the best Hester did on kickoff returns was to the 35-yard line. I’ll take it. It was disappointing to see Folk kick the opening kick out of bounds though. However, the FG attempts that weren’t blocked went through the uprights. It was nice to hear that McBriar did well also.

Before the game started, I kept thinking that this game would be more on the defense than the offense. With the flaws that this unit has, and the ineptness of the Bears offense, the Dallas defense still needed to make some plays. From the sound of things, it was Ware and Henry leading the way making plays.

When it comes to making plays, THE playmaker on Dallas is Tony Romo. He made some clutch throws. I love the deep middle pass to Owens where I was Sam Hurd lay out somebody. Then Tony rewards Sam with a 25-yard pass in the deep right flat. Witten was Witten, and that is the Witten we all really like. Amazing what happens when Tony gets him the ball. Crayton and Hurd are holding the fort just fine until Terry Glenn comes back.

The stat I loved the most is the 35:21 time of possession. That means the Cowboy offensive line dominated that Bear defense in Soldier Field.

Did you know that the Cowboys could get to 4-0 for the first time since 1983? That is almost a quarter of a century folks. It is something that Jimmy Johnson never did. I think Landry did that about five times. I’ll have to check. I know they did it in 1977 and 1983 when they started 8-0 and 7-0 respectively. Dallas won their first four games in 1981 before losing in St. Louis 20-17. I think Dallas did that twice in the late 60s as well.

However…

…The Cowboys need to get by the Rams.

Mark Bulger, Tory Holt, and Steven Jackson are capable of exploiting the Cowboy defense. Therefore, they cannot be taken lightly. This game could be a letdown game if the Cowboys do not maintain their concentration.

It sure is nice to see the Cowboys at 3-0 though.
