Bear's Annual Look at the Draft, 2010 Edition

A pleasure to read.

Things I found interesting:

This draft should be offense heavy, but only one defensive player?

I wonder how many snaps guys like Dickerson, Shipley, and Conner would likely see.

Yeah, I think this draft should be offense-heavy... we need more help there than we do on the defensive side of the ball, IMO...

As for Dickerson, Shipley and Conner, I'd say that Conner could see some action as the starting fullback, and wouldn't be surprised to see his snaps increase as the season goes along if he's the lead blocker I think he is... Shipley would immediately become our punt returner, at the very least... he'd most likely be no more than the 4th WR as a rookie, though, which means he wouldn't contribute much the first year... but I'll tell you what, this is the kind of kid who, if the injury bug bites and he's forced into action, could give a team 50-60 catches from the slot... then there's Dickerson; I don't know exactly how he fits in (unless the Boys send Bennett packing, which I'd be in favor of doing), but I think he'd pose a matchup nightmare as an H-back with that kind of speed...

nice analysis, silverbear.

what's your opinion on morgan burnett?

He's the kind of free safety that the Boys should be looking at, IMO, based on the number of plays he made as a junior... he didn't make as many plays last year, but I think that's because a) Tech lost most of its pass rush to the draft the year before, and b) teams started staying away from him...

I'd be quite content if the team grabbed him in the 2nd round...

Good stuff. I glhope Earl Thomas finds his way to Dallas.

If the Boys draft him, he won't have to find his way, I'll go down to Austin and drive him to Valley Ranch myself... :D

I Really liked that draft silverbear, only player i didnt like was jordan shipley. I would rather go with someone like emmanuel sanders or another wr we have looked at. Remember, that crayton runs a 5.53 in the 40, while shipley ran a 4.56 in the 40, which is a tad slower. We need a quicker faster wr in there.

First, I appreciate the compliment... now, as to Shipley, while I agree with you that the Boys could use some more deep speed in their receiver corps, you want that speed at your outside receivers, not in the slot... in the slot, you want a quick wide receiver who can get separation right off the line of scrimmage, and nobody in this draft is better at that than Shipley... I mean, I like Sanders too, but Shipley was born to play the slot in the NFL...

They'd have to move up for Thomas or Iupati in all liklihood, and giving up something to move up for a guard is rarely worth it IMO. In fact most know I'm pretty dead set against drafting guards in the first round at all.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you, but I definitely think that Iupati is the exception to that rule... I just think the guy has a lot of Larry Allen in him, so I'm completely in the tank for him...

Absolutely love Earl Thomas and think moving up for him would have the biggest impact on our team from any player we can reasonably get. He's the ballhawk this defense sorely lacks, its the one thing the defense lacks in terms of going from "very good" to "dominant"

We see eye to eye on that one... I'd be thrilled to have Earl come to the Boys, and not just because I'm a Horns Homer... he's a playmaker...

Have no problem taking McCourty or Wilson at 27. But believe if we stand pat we'll take Allen from S Florida.

Which is why I'd trade down there... I think Nate will be a decent free safety in the NFL, but he really hasn't been a playmaker in college...

I just dont see them taking McCluster if we keep all 3 RB's. He isnt a WR and wasnt a good returner in college. Ducasse would be a great pick with our 2nd, though I doubt he lasts that long.

Mentioning McCluster there is a nod to the whispers I've heard that the Boys really like him... you might be right about Ducasse, I just went with the current ratings from NFLDS for the most part, because I like them, but of course they're not oracles... they have their pet cats, and players they underrate...

I dont see the Dickerson thing though. He isnt going to be a lead blocking FB and if Bennett isnt traded, he isnt going to get on the field as a move TE/H Back either. Bowman here would be interesting, or Sean Lee if he fell that far.

That's just me hoping that 'Tellus is sent packing... I'm frankly sick of the guy, and his ego, and his immaturity... I think he could become a locker room problem if he stays behind Witten, and of course he's not beating Jason out... if the Boys can get anything at all for Bennett, take it...

I don't think there's much chance that Lee slides that far, but I hear he's the linebacker that the team really likes... however, I do think Bowman could make a seamless transition to ILB, so I could see the Boys drafting him instead...

Newhouse looks like a Houck type OL, and offers alot of OL flexibility.

I agree completely... I liked him a lot even before I read that some scouts think he could play center... looking at his initial quickness, they might be right...

Shipley here I wouldnt hate. Not in love with him either though.

Chuckle... allow me my one dream, OK?? The rest of the draft, I tried to keep my pet cats on a leash...

As an SEC guy, I really like the Connor kid. Would most likely be an upgrade over Anderson and not come with the baggage.

Every year, I look for the best lead blocker in the draft, and put him on my list... so I'm pleased to know that the Boys are looking at him...

The only other comment I'd make is you have us taking 3 OL and none of them plays center, which means Proctor is likely still the backup G/C on game days.

I'd see Newhouse, Bright and Preston battling it out for the backup center spot if the draft went this way... surely one of them can unseat the Proctologist...

I really appreciate the thoughtful, in-depth response here, pal... especially when it comes from somebody I regard as a knowledgeable draftnik... after writing that loooong sucker up, I'm tired of typing, but your post demanded that I respond... LOL...

I like the draft, though I have noticed quite a few mocks on this board that also pick Dickerson, Conner, Newhouse and Webb in the later rounds. Not that I have a problem with those players, but it's becoming a bit predictable...

Well, I did say at the outset that I find myself agreeing with the consensus for the most part this year...

I take this as a sign that I'm rubbing off on you guys, and you're becoming better draftniks... :D

Based on the players you listed Bear,

2 - Allen
2 - Houston
3 - Petrus
3 - Mitchell
4 - Newhouse
6 - Conner
7 - Webb

Hey, I could live with that... all you need to do is insert Shipley for Mitchell...

What kind of Horns Homer are you, anyway?? LOL...

The Bear brings the joy on an Easter Sunday. Thanks my ursine friend.

Chuckle... I've been accused of bringing many things in my day (most of them unpleasant-smelling), but rarely "joy"...

That's a nice compliment, and I appreciate it...

I appreciate all the nice things folks have had to say about this thread... I figure if I do good this one time a year, it makes up for all the crapola I inflict on the board the rest of the year... :D

Seems about in line with my thoughts as well, even snuck Konz in there as Dickerson-lite. You've got my pet cats Clay Harbor and John Jerry as a possibility as well and I kind of agree that Nate Allen's skill level has been elevated quite a bit around here.

At this point, I just want the draft to get here already. Thank goodness for mock drafts.

Oh, I think Allen has talent, I just think the Boys need to force more turnovers, and he really didn't do a lot of that in college...

Yeah, I like this draft a lot. About the only thing I'd change is selecting Javier Arenas over Owusu-Ansah. I think he's the best all around return man in the nation, and even with his slight size managed to start at corner for the best defense in the country two years straight. I think he'd fill two holes for the Cowboys with one pick. Nice work Bear.

I tried to focus on players we know the Boys have looked at... there are 41 players discussed in my analysis, only 5 of them were pet cats of mine that I haven't heard the Boys might like...

I like Owusu-Ansah as a safety prospect, which is of course a role Arenas would not be suited for...

Bear, I do have one issue with your analysis. You didnt mention CB Kareem Jackson in the 2nd round. The kid can cover.

Again, I tried to focus on players the Boys have demonstrated some level of interest in... I've got over 200 players for my spreadsheet at this point, there's no way I could have included all of 'em...

You guys could take a REALLY long dump reading that analysis if I had...

nice one bear

here I fixed it for you - lol

FIRST ROUND Mike Iupati
SECOND ROUND Akwasi Owusu-Ansah
THIRD ROUND Clay Harbor
FOURTH ROUND DT Jeff Owens - Georgia
SIXTH ROUND John Conner
SEVENTH ROUND J'Marcus Webb

well the Cowboys should be interested in Jackson....he was pretty darn good for the National Champs. Bama doesn't really kill you with blitzing...they just really on a steady pass rush, excellent coverage, and LBs who can read, react, and tackle.

You put Jackson on our defense, one that pressures the heck out of the QB, and you allow him to suffocate opposing WRs. I honestly feel Jenkins and Jackson would make a great tandem of CBs for us for years to come. But first we have to draft Jackson.

since the crapola is usually directed towards the Sooner nation.........I dont consider it crapola at all....more like an injection of good taste.

Oh, I think of myself as a bit of a renaissance man when it comes to spreading the crapola-- in time, just about everybody winds up stepping in it...

But of course, Sooners fans get more than their fair share, because they deserve it... :D
