A very rare and unusual summer for bear attacks in and around the city of Anchorage this year. We have had people being chased and mauled on a consistent basis. There hasn't been a week that has gone by so far this summer that I have not read about someone being chased or bit.

I am sure you are all aware of the little girl who nearly died when a mother sow charged her in a midnight bicycle race. She was on the race trail alone on her mountain bike when the bear charged her and knocked her off her bike. The bear drug her off the trail and really messed her up pretty bad. She is recovering in the hospital and should be released soon.

Many of my friends have had far more bear encounters this summer than any summer of memory.

This is a video that some folks shot yesterday in Eagle River. This is a fairly large community right outside of Anchorage. It is all city where this video is shot. It is shocking to say the least. Check out this video.

When I lived in Albuquerque, there was one year where an unbelievable amount of bears came down into the city. It happened almost weekly. There was very little rain up in the mountains that year, and hence, very little edible vegetation, thereby bringing the bears down the mountain looking for food.

What has the weather been like up there this summer?

In Sunnyvale, the only animal you might come across would be a coyote. I can't imagine walking down a street and coming upon a bear.

I was born in the Elmendorf AFB hospital, back in 1952... my Dad was stationed at Fort Richardson, and the army base didn't have a hospital, they shared (still do today, I learned on a cruise a few years back)...

Actually, Dad was the NCO in charge of the ashphalt plant that was located on Elmendorf... he said that for decades, if you drove on a paved road in Alaska, the odds were good that the ashphalt came from his plant...

When I was stationed at Ft. Richardson and Wainwright the black bears were brave enought to show up at the firing ranges when we were shooting live rounds....

They would just stare at us until a cease fire was called.....
