I know the defense is broken beyond all compare. The best players we have on D were on IR, on the treatment table or playing through injuries.
The poor performance of the defense all season long then is no surprise and blame can't entirely be placed on the defensive coaches or the head coach, they did what they could with a rag tag band of nobodies and walking wounded.
Where the majority of my disappointment lies with the 2013 season is the failure of the offense to improve despite miraculous line play (Compared to what was expected going into the season). And those failures fall into 3 main categories for me:
Every defensive co-ordinator out there knows that if they can get us into a 3rd and 3+ situation, Garrett will call in a passing play and we can be forced off the field by dialing up the blitz. We have no answer for it.
The afore-mentioned (Notably improved) offensive line still struggles with the blitz and you can count on the QB having to get the ball out in a heartbeat. You can also count on his only options at that point being a dump off to the flats for almost always no to little gain, or heaving it into the stands to avoid a sack. I guess the other option is for Tony to fall in a heap on the floor to save his back some punishment.
Aside from the occasional miraculous escape from Tony to buy himself the time required for our slow developing plays we get exactly nothing when the opposing defense blitzes. We have no answer. In those situations, we lose.
Why is it that nobody has sat down and designed quick developing plays to beat the blitz? We should be blitz killers!. We have a wealth of talent at WR and TE, a QB who has the talent and the stats to prove it, Murray who is plenty capable catching out of the back field. It seems there is no reason, not one that we shouldn't have plenty of ways to destroy opposition defenses when they bring the house against us. Tony should have the plays so that when he sees the pressure coming (And we all know it will) his eyes light up, because we have just the play and personnel to make them pay. And if they try again, we'll make them pay again.
If we could just make this improvement next year I think this offense would be every bit as successful as the Broncos and Saints have been these year. We'd regularly be putting up 30,40 and 50 points on teams and it would help cover up all the defensive issues we had this year and will almost certainly have next year.
Here's hoping that the offensive brain trust at Valley Ranch spends more than a little time this lengthy off season figuring out how to finally beat the blitz next year. I think it might be our best hope at improving our record next year.

- Failure to commit to the run
- Failure to turn loose Dez and allow him to beat his coverages
