Beautiful run by Emmitt

Even most Cowboys fans would agree that Emmitt probably wasn't the best pure runner ever. But he does not get nearly enough credit for the fact that he was incredibly difficult to bring down. His balance was as good as anyone.

As in speed, no. But in vision hitting the holes, breaking tackles, and getting better as the game went on, that is what made him what he was.

What is a "pure" runner...well, he didn't have to be, as he was the best "complete pure" RB....
Not only his balance and power, his vision was one of the best ever too. Up there with Tony D.

Even his speed, I didn't see him get caught from behind on that 75 yarder the way fat *** DeMarco would have.

He had deceptive speed. Not break out speed that BSanders had. It was an endless debate who was better, Sanders or Emmitt during those times.

He also knew when to stay patient behind the blockers and when to hit the hole. Those types of RB's always make their O-Line look better than they actually are. I remember when Curtis Martin had that great 2004 season and he and his O-Line commented that he was finally starting to master patience and let O-Line block for him. That was Martin's 10th year in the league. Emmitt was showing that in year two.

Emmitt was also good at staying low (hard to see) and had great cutting ability. He just wasn't fast and wasn't going to truck people like Earl Campbell or Christian Okoye. But everything else you would look for in a runner he was about as good as it gets.

Yes. Unfortunately there was an endless debate and it wasn't even close. Barry Sanders is the most overrated player I have ever watched.

Well the thing was Sanders didn't have Emmitt's OL. Myself don't know what he was overrated at.

He had everything but top speed.

Imo, the Oline gets way too much credit.

Dallas was terrible when Emmitt was out.

We could win games without Aikman and Irvin but when Emmitt was out we were terrible.

Backup rb's were bad. I can't remember one that consistently did anything during the sb runs. Maybe we had one, I can't remember.

Emmitt ran the ball and helped his team win games, Sanders was always trying to make something huge happen.

Emmitt's runs would go something like this...

5
3
4
6
2
8
2

Those were consistent chain moving runs, good for a YPC of 4.29

Sanders would do something like this...

2
-5
0
-1
40
-2
5

That YPC will get you 5.14

I'll take number 1 myself and so would Jimmy Johnson. Emmitt was a consistent, dependable chain mover. Sanders is the all time leader in negative yardage.

With the legend of how great that OL was you would think anyone could run behind that OL.

Imo, Emmitt probably had the best vision of any RB I've ever seen.

I think Emmitt was better than Barry. I don't think he was flashier but I think Emmitt had elite everything but top speed.

He could block, catch, see, maintain balance, run with power, juke and just do everything at a extremely high level.

Emmitts biggest fault is we saw him get old and we saw Barry leave at his peak.

I have both of those games on video.
Plan is to eventually get them converted to digital.

I have most games from 92-97 on VHS. They are just rotting away. I started to convert them to digital but then gave up. I have always wondered why the NFL doesn't sell copies of old games. There are plenty that I would watch again. Heck, they can even insert modern commercials (though I miss the ones from the 90's).

I'm pretty sure Emmitt can live with that trade off, otherwise he'd have to settle for being the #2 all-time leading rusher in yards

Besides, Emmitt was basically a rotten back for the final 9 years of his career and it hasn't hurt his reputation at all. I always thought Emmitt was like Favre, he was so awesome at the beginning he could have retired at age 26 and been a first ballot hall of famer. By 26 years old Emmitt had already won the rushing title 4 of the last 5 years and had an MVP and 3 Super Bowl rings. He could have just retired right then and strolled in to the hall of fame.

Most of the offensive line was together before Emmitt got there (with the exception of Eric Williams, Mark Stepnoski, and Larry Allen). So many people always give credit to the offensive line for Emmitt's yards. I've seen Emmitt make linebackers, safeties, and dlinemen look foolish trying to tackle him in the backfield. Emmitt isn't given enough credit. Funny thing is that same offensive line couldn't get those same yards for other running backs. Another thing if that offensive line is the reason we have the All Time Leading Rusher in the NFL, then why aren't any of them in the Hall of Fame????
