I'm not going to argue with any win but why didn't the clock start after the penalty was declined?

Eli said he thought we used a timeout when the clock stopped on the penalty declined and he lost track of our timeouts because of it.

Clock always stops. I believe depending on the circumstances its a 10-second reel off.

So what's his excuse? Bc he thought we were out of timeouts and we weren't he decided to throw the ball away and kill the clock instead of taking the sack? Lol

Why was Eli snapping the ball with so much time on the clock throughout that drive?

This. Especially that one play where the refs made the running clock match the 40 second play clock...he hiked the ball at around 34 seconds I believe. Weird that the commentators didn't pick up on it.

The clock always stops on a penalty, whether it is accepted or declined.

IIRC, it has to be within a certain amount of minutes at the end of both halves for this to be true. I don't know the exact minutes, but this situation was within it.

I was thinking it during the game -- in some odd, cosmic way, the penalties were helping us. Because the clock stopped each and every time.

You're correct. It's the last five minutes of the fourth quarter or the last two minutes of the second quarter.

The 10-second runoff rule:

  1. A team cannot buy an excess time out for a penalty. However, a fourth time out is allowed without penalty for an injured player, who must be removed immediately. A fifth time out or more is allowed for an injury and a five-yard penalty is assessed if the clock was running. Additionally, if the clock was running and the score is tied or the team in possession is losing, the ball cannot be put in play for at least 10 seconds on the fourth or more time out. The half or game can end while those 10 seconds are run off on the clock.
  2. If the defensive team is behind in the score and commits a foul when it has no time outs left in the final 40 seconds of either half, the offensive team can decline the penalty for the foul and have the time on the clock expire.
  3. Fouls that occur in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter as well as the last two minutes of the first half will result in the clock starting on the snap.

Remember when this bit us in the butt against Detroit a couple years ago? The game where Calvin Johnson had like 400 yards. We were trying to run out the clock but Tyron was called for holding, it stopped the clock giving Detroit a free timeout and enough time to come back and win.

Not sure how that makes a difference, because we really were out of time outs when he gave us his gift.

After how many years in the league and he can't figure it how many time outs a division rival has in the most important part of the game? Haha he is just making excuses don't fall in that trap
