How did this team get into this pickle? How did this defense, with all those #1 draft picks get so bad. How did this OL never become a great one. What is it that made us have all this dead money and still need re-building.

You can talk all you want about the draft and free agency, but until you look at what got us to this point, and make changes, you are doomed to make the same mistakes. I think that Jerry and company are not looking at what got them to this point and are just shooting from the hip with no plan.

Until they examine this, there is no hope of making the necessary changes to ensure that we don't keep repeating.

So, how did we get to this point?

Because Jerry paced too much emphasis on getting the bling, the skill position players who we can all ooh and ahh about. And he allowed the dogs to just happen by magic, or by signing players in FA who had too few quality years left to them, like Davis. He was a great power run guard, and not much else- after a few seasons, he wasn't even that. I liked Colombo, but he was not a long term solution either.

He also pursued "players" who seemed great, and some were actually great.... individual pieces... but never fit the scheme. We were scatter gun about talent, we signed "individuals" with talen, and we had (have) talent- but that talent was (is) individual talent, not the type that jelled and meshed together- in the scheme, as a TEAM.

We need to draft players to fit a scheme, and stick to the chosen scheme- that is how you build a team that functions well. Continuity, following a process that builds upon itself.

By dogs, I mean the guys in the trenches who battle physically on every snap. These are the guys who go all out for their team on every snap, the pushing , shoving, kicking, gouging, pinching, biting, snarling, spitting guys in the trenches.

We need to get our dogs. They are the ones who enable the "stars" to shine at their brightest.

Jerruh and bad coaches. In several areas.

Ignoring the O line was critical; not spending high choices on O line- unlike EVERY other team in the NFL over the last 6 drafts- doomed us there.

Mistakes like Carpenter and Spencer and the like did not help.
shiny toys like WRs instead of linemen.

I said in another thread, I have been waiting for years for us to use our first round picks on lineman! The game is won in the trenches
