Behind the scenes with Hopkins

Any new moves may be complicated in dealing for Hopkins...

...There’s another complication. Although Hopkins said during an early March appearance with Pat McAfee that Hopkins has hired an agent for this next phase of his career, NFL Players Association records reveal that he is unrepresented.

Per multiple sources, the notorious Saint Omni is “running the show” for Hopkins. At least one viable contender for Hopkins’s services is leery about dealing with Omni. And for good reason. Last year, the NFL specifically warned all teams not to deal with Omni or any other non-certified agent in connection with linebacker Roquan Smith.

Although Omni has managed to work in the shadows, or more conspicuously, on behalf of players like Smith and Texans tackle Laremy Tunsil, if a team that otherwise would be aggressively pursuing Hopkins opts to back away because it’s not comfortable dealing with Omni, that necessarily limits the player’s potential options.

Thus, between the player’s expectations and unofficial representation, it might not be as simple and as seamless as it would seem for Hopkins to land on a new team.

Hopkins has been injured during the past two seasons. If acquired by Dallas, he could produce well and not have to carry an undeserving load as well. Going with Dallas would be a smart move as well as give him a real shot to play well in the playoffs.

If he is willing to take less money, which doesn't seem likely.
Also, I like him as a player...I don't like him playing things out in the public.

A look at 20 of the NFL's most surprising cuts

3. Emmitt Smith

Smith was released by the Cowboys shortly after he broke Walter Payton's career rushing record. A three-time Super Bowl champion for the Cowboys, Smith chose to continue his career after signing with the Cardinals in 2003. Smith had a forgettable first season in Arizona but ended his career on a high note after having a respectable 2004 season that saw him rush for 937 yards, the exact total he rushed for as a rookie 14 years earlier.

6. Terrell Owens

Owens was released by the Cowboys despite catching 69 passes for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns during the 2008 season. Those numbers, however, were a dip from his 2007 campaign that saw him catch 81 passes for 1,355 yards and 15 touchdowns. Owens had a solid seasons for the Bills (2009) and Bengals (2010) but wasn't picked up by any club after his lone season in Cincinnati.

8. DeMarcus Ware

A member of this year's Hall of Fame induction class, Ware was released after recording six sacks during his final year in Dallas. Ware, who recorded 117 of his 138.5 career sacks with the Cowboys, had a career rebirth with the Broncos, where he was selected to two Pro Bowls while helping the Broncos win Super Bowl 50.

18. Dez Bryant

A valued member of the Cowboys' No. 88 club, Bryant was released after his eighth season in Dallas, which saved $8 million in cap space by releasing him ahead of the 2018 season. An Achilles injury sidelined Bryant for two years before he finally made his comeback (albeit brief) for the Ravens in 2020.

2. Cowboys
They don't necessarily need another big-money target with 2022 second-team All-Pro CeeDee Lamb headlining their group, but there's a reason they traded a couple late-round picks to the Houston Texans for Brandin Cooks after flirting with Odell Beckham Jr. Adding a third proven route-winner like Hopkins to Lamb and Cooks would take pressure off of Michael Gallup as the No. 3, and when doesn't Jerry Jones enjoy making a splash? The financials would be the biggest hurdle, but with many players entering the end of their rookie deals in the near future, the time is now for Dallas.

It's tough, what kind of contract would you give to a 30 year old WR? The Jets are my favorites to get him. After all, Rodgers doesn't have a 1M cap hit this year for nothing. I'm assuming it's to acquire talent while the QB cap hit is nonexistent.

every single free agent that is out there we hear the same old crap from so many on here.... well Id do it if he took less money. Well.... dont sit around and say the player must take a league minimum deal and then complain about why we never get free agents. He will get what the market will pay him.... and it will not be cheap. OBJ got a 1 year deal that will pay him at least 17 million if he isnt injured. Hopkins is in a better spot than OBJ was.

I believe Emmitt had some injuries, I think to his shoulder his 1st year with the Cards.

He asked for his release from Dallas also, IIRC. As Parcels was coming in. And he knew Bill would probably replace him.
so he wanted to continue while he still had value To go elsewhere.

CD Lamb is about the NFL's 6th best wide receiver. Brandin Cooks is about the NFL's 26th best wide receiver. Hopkins is about the NFL's 16th best receiver. Their combining in the same positional group, would elevate that receiving group to the top of the NFL and immediately give the Dallas Cowboys credability for their offense to perform on a similar level as their defense.

That justifies the expense, as of June 1, the team will have about $16 M cap space to use and the ability to pay the players needing pending contracts and project out into the immediate future with to continue cap management in line with revenues to arrive from the media contracts into the NFL.

That is smart, my friend...

Just say no to Hopkins. It would be a stupid move.
Agreed…I think MM has made overtures he wants to get back to running the ball, so I don’t see the rationale in picking up another WR at this juncture. Dallas acquired Cooks to complement Lamb; and Gallup, should be closer to form another year removed from ACL surgery. Dallas drafted Vaughn and they have a couple of TEs who contributed in their rookie years…so plenty of targets for Dak.

Despite Hopkins saying he's willing to accept a much smaller salary to join a contender, recent reports since his official release from the Arizona Cardinals say otherwise.

Several sources say Hopkins is seeking a contract upwards of the $15 million annual average secured by Odell Beckham Jr. in his recent signing with the Baltimore Ravens.

As it stands right now, the Cowboys have approximately $10.550 million in cap space, with another $10.9 million added after June 1st.

Nearly $22 million in cap space is what is giving Cowboys Nation hope that DeAndre Hopkins will come strolling into The Star to sign a contract, but it's not likely.

This would be off the charts...$15M for Hopkins and then this:

This Cowboys-Vikings trade for Dalvin Cook could actually work:

Dallas Cowboys
RECEIVE
Dalvin Cook

Vickings
RECEIVE
2024 Fourth-Round Pick
2024 Seventh-Round Pick

The going rate for running backs is very cheap. As we noted earlier, though, Cook remains one of the league's most dynamic and explosive backs.

In 2022, he rushed for 1,174 yards and eight touchdowns on 4.4 yards per attempt behind a wonky offensive line. He added 39 catches for 295 yards and two scores as a receiver, while forcing 51 missed tackles, averaging 3.18 yards after contact per rush attempt and totaling 30 explosive runs, per PFF.

Now, Jerry, you tell us now, these types of trades and moves are off the table for the Dallas Cowboys!
