Belichick: 'There was no deception' in videotaping opponents

May 16, 2008

BOSTON -- New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick lashed out at the team's former video assistant Friday, saying in a televised interview with CBS that Matt Walsh was a low-level staffer who was fired for "poor job performance"

"There's not a lot of credibility," Belichick said in an interview broadcast on CBS Evening News.

"You know, he's tried to make it seem like we're buddies, and belong to the same book club and all. That's really a long, long stretch."
Belichick acknowledged that he violated NFL rules prohibiting filming opponents signals but insisted there was no intent to hide what he was doing.
"I made a mistake," he said in the interview. "I was wrong. I was wrong."

That rationale has already been rejected by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who fined the coach $500,000 and docked the Patriots $250,000 and its first-round draft pick.

"I didn't accept Bill Belichick's explanation for what happened," Goodell said Tuesday, "and I still don't to this day."

In an interview with HBO for Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel, Walsh dismissed Belichick's attempts to minimize the impact of the taping. Walsh told HBO he was coached on how to evade NFL rules, and that team officials instructed him on ways to avoid detection.

"When I was doing it, I understood what we were doing to be wrong," Walsh said. "Coach Belichick's explanation for having misinterpreted the rules, to me, that really didn't sound like taking responsibility for what we had done, especially considering the great lengths that we had gone through to hide what we were doing."

Belichick denied telling Walsh to hide what he was doing.
"You look at the tape. You see him filming the game," the coach told CBS. "You tell me how discrete it is."

Belichick has said he didn't even know Walsh, who was fired for poor performance and for making a tape recording of a meeting with player personnel director Scott Pioli.

"For him to talk about game-planning and strategy and play-calling and how he advised coordinators, it's embarrassing; it's absurd," Belichick said. "He didn't have any knowledge of football. He was our third video assistant."

Belichick's comments came on the same day the Boston Herald printed a front-page apology by reporter John Tomase, who wrote on the day before New England's Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants this year that the Patriots had taped the St. Louis Rams' walkthrough before the 2002 NFL title game.

Under the headline: "How it went wrong," Tomase wrote that he heard rumors the team's cheating was more widespread than the league had already acknowledged. But when he learned the team's video crew had been setting up equipment at the walkthrough, he made a "devastating leap of logic," by assuming the camera was rolling.

"First and foremost, this is about a writer breaking one of the cardinal rules of journalism: I failed to keep challenging what I had been told," he said.
"I had repeatedly heard that this walkthrough had been taped, and from people I trusted. Eventually I accepted it as fact and stopped questioning the assertion."

If there was no deception, why didn't he just ask opposing DC's which defenses they planned to run and when during the weeks leading up to the games?

It would have been much easier than paying somebody to film the signals, and then film the corresponding defensive formations in order to make a connection between the two.

You know Bill, eliminate the guesswork.

Its this kind of arrogance and that shown by Kraft on the nflnetwork that really bothers me that the commissioner really screwed the pooch on not punishing them more.

The only thing embarrassing and absurd and with no credibility is Belichick himself. He's consistently lied throughout the entire process.

Imagine a murderer being investigate by the police who lies about where he was, not knowing the victim, not having purchased the murder weapon, then changed his stories about where he was, knowning the victim and having purchased a weapon similar to the murder weapon. And then imagine the murderer claiming that a person privy to the plans about the murder has no crediblity, is absurd and embarrassing because of course, we should trust the murderer who has lied and changed his story every step of the way.

If there's one thing that points to Goodell's slack punishment, it's obvious that Belichick simply hasn't learned what he did was wrong.

I find it kind of hypocritical that Goodell is focused so intently on having Adam Jones own up to his misdeeds before reinstating him, but there is no concerted effort to make Belichick admit that he purposely broke the rules.

Precisely.

With my (admittedly) limited knowledge of this debacle, I still have to strongly agree with you on that point.

Belicheck is not only a cheater but now he is being shown as a liar.
If anyone believes Belicheck's monotone explanation of "We had a misinterpration of the rule" then you are the same people who believe Roger Clemens " I think Andy misremembers."

you got that right, he is a cheater and a liar, not only that he is a family destroyer, not sure if you guys know this, but a few years back, he was dating a woman that was married and sending her gifts etc,

now talk about the nfl having a standard of degree and one of your head coaches is fooling around with a married woman,

God will get him, first guys dont know if you didnt see a film clip of a ref and belicheater but he was on the field of play, which we all know is against nfl rules, the ref told him to get off of the field, arrogant as he is, he said, i just want to see the play called from the refs if 1st down or not, i think it was a big 4th down play,

the ref repeated again, get off of the field, belicheater stepped even furthe onto the field,

pride comes before a fall, and God will get belilcheater and the pats for standing behind him,

like kraft said which i dont believe, anywy, kraft says i didnt know this was happening, if i was the owner, and i found out my head coach was cheating, fooling around with a married woman, staining the image of my team, i would fire him in a heartbeat,

so i think all of this hasnt come out yet, will one day, and we really will know how bad it is, i think its just skimmed the surface,

The treatment of Pacman Jones as compared Bellicheat is just a microcosm of the justice system and how it seems to work often in this country.

Pacman Jones is analagous to the minority, "blue collar" criminal, whereas Bellicheat is analagous to the majority, "white collar" criminal.

true sultan, about collar ideals,

i think it has more to do with goodell like some people have said that goodell and kraft are friends, and goodell has bought into what kraft says, so belicheck gets away with things too,

because 2 key things come to mind
1. coaches are to be held more accountable than players, so he suspends wade wilson a asst coach 5 games and 33% of his check, both guys are white
2. after viewing the tapes, which are of defensive stealings, etc, if more information is revealed, i will look into it, adn deem more punishment if need be, well; one of the tapes was an offensive coordiantor stealing signals, which is NOT DEFENSIVE THAT GOODELL SAID HE FOUND IN TAPES & NOTES, SO THATS MORE INFO, THEN HE FINDS OUT THAT WALSH WAS AT THE PRESUPERBOWL WALKTHROUGH, UNDERNEATH NFL SECURITY, BUT HE GOT AWAY WITH IT, WHY, ITS AGAINST NFL FULES FOR ANY OTHER OPPONENTS TEAMS TO BE VIEWING THEIR WALKTHROUGHS PERIOD, ANOTHER BIG FAT COVERUP,

this goes to the theory that has been rurmored that goodell and kraft are friends, good friends in fact goodell might be a patriots fan, then you add in the fact that goodell said they were having a diffiicult time trying to get agreement for walsh to reveal info to goodell and the nfl, so

in those meetings, if you are trying to get info on a team or player, you dont have an fbi agent sent by the nfl to check walsh background etc, thats harrasment, and you sure dont have a patriots lawyer in on the meetings, those meetings should have been only walsh, his lawyer and the nfl not the patriots lawyer, why was he there,

again it was reported that he harrased walsh at those meetings, with goodell, and goodell and the nfl asked what questions they wanted to say the case is closed,

but specter finds out that walsh was at the presuper bowl walkthrough, and he gave notes etc to an offenisve coordinator for the patriots, again, a big fat coverup,

to me,that is what this is showing, goodell is friends with kraft and he doenst want anythign else to be shown to show how he and the nfl have messed up this whole punishment by not doing enough like they should have,

Not to mention Goodell said he didn't believe Belicheat when he said he "misinterpreted the rules." I'm not one to stick up for Adam Jones, but my question is, would Goodell reinstate him if he continued to deny his guilt?

The way I see it, it comes down to who's buttering his bread and he simply sees no way to deal other than to sweep it under the rug. Otherwise he risks bringing a huge scandal on the league and possible personal repurcussions, including possibly being voted as out commisioner, which outweigh the integrity of the game.

Bill Belicheat may be the most arrogant sports figure in the world today.

Sad part is that he doesn't even play the game.

His players should be revolting against him for putting their merits on the line because he needed to get that extra little edge which was more risk than reward.

Yet they are acting as if they would still go to war for him. Hate to say it, but it's like he's a cult leader or something. They have completely bought in to the 'genius' thing with him and they don't think he can ever do wrong in their eyes. So now they will have to live forever with a cloud of doubt around the legacy of those Championship teams.

i agree totally dc, thats what the nfl and goodell is doing,

they punish other players, and teams, but when it comes to belicheck and patriots hands off, unless someone breaks the news and makes the nfl do something,

now if specter and all of us fans, keep looking, like the guy that posted what a player said about troy brown and playes praticing in injured reserve, which their not suppose to do, then we can show more and more cheating belicheck has done AND MAKE GOODELL DO SOMETHING,

THATS THE KEY, SHOW CORRUPTION BY BELICKECK, HIS LYING, CHEATING AND MAKE GOODELL KNOW THAT THE WHOLE UNITED STATES FANS KNOWS THAT HE HAS CHEATED AND TRIED TO COVER IT UP AND MAKE FORCE GOODELLS HAND TO DO SOMETHING

THAT COMES WITH THE PUBLIC GIVING MORE INFORMATION TO SENATOR SPECTER SO HE CAN FORCE GOODELLS HAND BY SHOWING CORRUPTION, DECEIT, LYING AND CHEATING BY BELILCHECK

Define "Poor job performance" = not stealing the signals the right way as instructed by Bill?

Yes. Belichick should have had a suspension.

They should have never had a shot at the Perfect Season. Should have had atleast a forfeit game(Jets) on that schedule.

But in a Karma kind of way it actually helped defeat them.
