Believing in the "system" and having a shutdown CB

I haven't posted here in a while but I hope everyone is doing well. With the lockout coming to end, I thought I would give my two cents with what I hope the Cowboys do in free agency. A couple of opinions I'd like to give:

1. You can win with average to above average safeties.
2. You can never have enough CB's.
3. If you have players who believe in the system (defensively in this case), you have a recipe for success.

I'll use the New York Jets as my prime example. Can you name their starters on defense? Do they have an elite pass rusher or an elite safety? They definitely don't. What the Jets do have, are a shutdown CB in Revis, and a defensive minded coach who make the players BELIEVE.

Rex Ryan and Darrelle Revis.

Those two people are mainly responsible as to why the Jets find themselves competing for the Lombardi Trophy in January. Now I know I'm neglecting the offensive side of the ball for the Jets, but the bottom line is, all their QB has to do is not LOSE the game, run the football and use their great offensive line. The bottom line is, the Jets win on defense 99.9% of the time.

It's time for the Cowboys to have their "duo" like the Jets do.

Rob Ryan and Nnamdi Asomugha.

These two upgrades immediately put us in contention for a Super Bowl in my opinion. It totally changes what we do on defense, and we have a much better offense than the Jets (this is assuming our OL is better, but statistically we are much better). Here's my offseason:

Re-signings
DE Stephen Bowen
OT Doug Free
OG Kyle Kosier
SS Gerald Sensabaugh

Cuts
OT Marc Colombo
RB Marion Barber
CB Terence Newman

FA signings
CB Nnamdi Asomugha
FS Brodney Pool or S Abram Elam
DE Cullen Jenkins (may come not as expensive due to injury)

Please give your thoughts/comments! :star:

where to start. Revis is not the reason. He is PART of the reason but probably not even the biggest single part.

Having a shut down corner does you no good if you cannot get to the QB or stop the run.

Getting to the QB is a lot more likely to get it done then having ONE shut down corner. we learned that even with Deion who was in another league then anyone else playing today is.

This is just another excuse to waste $15 million a year on Nmadi and its no smarter this way then any other.

I can get on board with that plan. I'd rather have Huff.

I think you're missing my point. The Jets DO NOT have an elite pass rusher. Heck, can you name their outside linebackers? It's because of the SCHEME that Rex Ryan runs. He turns mediocre players into solid, above average players. Revis is the main reason, player wise, why the Jets compete every year, and I totally disagree with you. Give the man his props! Nnamdi is on his level.

EDIT: When the Jets lost Kris Jenkins in back to back years, what did the Jets do? They plugged an unknown right in and kept the train going. That's what you call believing in the system and having an elite defensive scheme.

So would I. If this year is uncapped, who knows?

At the same time though......is Rob gonna give Dallas what Rex provides the Jets?

How many playoff wins did the Raiders have with Nnamdi?

How many playoff wins did the Cowboys have after the 1st year with Deion?

I really believe he will. He's never had an elite pass rusher like Ware but I believe he needs that man-to-man corner who can be left on an island because we're going to be blitzing a lot more this year.

I have no problem with your wish list but I think the overall cost factor will prevent this from happing. I do expect to see the Cowboys resign DE Stephen Bowen,OT Doug Free, OG Kyle Kosier and SS Gerald Sensabaugh

I also expect the Cowboys to go after a safety and possiable some lower cost FA outside of that I think the fact the Cowboys have one of the highest payrolls in the league that we will not go after Asomugha

1st of all: Deion isn't to blame for the downfall in the mid to late nineties. Free agency and poor drafting is the reason the Cowboys stopped winning.

2nd of all: It's the Raiders. They don't have a quarterback, their OL is mediocre, their WR's are below average and....they are the Raiders.

yet you claim Revis is the reason the Jets are contenders.

He is, player-wise. Imagine what this D could be with an elite pass rusher in Ware, a shutdown corner in Asomugha, and a defensive coordinator that the players believe in.

ah what happened to not needing a pass rush and only needing a top coach and a shut down CB (which revis really isnt anyway)?

Dude, this is pointless. I was talking about the Jets specifically as an example, that you can have a great defense without an elite pass rusher. Solid coaching and having a shutdown corner like Revis (yes, he is shutdown and if you don't think so then you're crazy) is enough to be elite on defense.

Talking about the Cowboys, they already have an elite pass rusher in Ware, and a much more potent offense than the Jets. Adding a shutdown CB in Asomugha would be the last piece. He would make everyone around him better.

Anyone ever consider that the Jets wouldn't have that defense if they threw it every down?

There has been only one true shutdown CB and it was not Revis. Revis got beat and he got took and he has been made to look bad many more times then Deion did when he was in his prime.

Bottom line is that a so called shut down CB is not that important.

I would have to include Bart Scott. He is the leader on that defense. I Also would not cut Newman. When healthy he is still a top corner in the league.

The concept that the Ryans preach is team defense. That’s why you can plug in Joe Shmoe and keep it running.
