After posting this I think I'll get back to the work that actually pays me.
When looking at an opponent we've not played in some time, I always try to find the closest NFL comparitive whom we have recently played. For the Bengals, I'd have to go with the Giants. More so on the defensive side of the ball, but close overall.
That's the good news since we've actually faired well in recent Giant's games.
They have a great front 4 and get an outstanding pass rush without blitzing. They don't have and excellent back 7 and don't play the run real well. BTW, 4.4 yards per rush gained against and about the same total rush yards as their opponents.
Now why we've done well offensively against a similar opponent who's strengths would lead you to believe we couldn't, I can't say.
Perhaps we commit to running it more and playing more 2 TE sets. Something I highly recommend we do. In fact Garrett should probably pull out the Giants gameplan for this week.
We should go play action pass out of 2 TEs on 1st down taking a good look deep to Dez. But don't just chuck it up into double coverage. I hate when Tony does that on 1st down. If you don't have it, check it down or scramble for a few yards.
Then come back on 2nd down with a lead draw to Murray. That play we used to run so often that doesn't look like a traditional draw. More like something I call pass action draw where the OL blocks like it's a run and only Tony and the WRs give a pass action type move at the snap.
We can't expect to block that front 4 effectively all day in the run or pass game. Our best chance for success is to pass on run downs and run on pass downs all game long.
We go against the teeth of what that front 4 is playing, we'll lose most of the time.
Plenty of traditional draw plays on 2nd and 3rd downs when they most likely have their ears pinned back.
If we don't effectively scheme/deceive them with the run game, we will lose. We'll need at least 8 runs from Murray between 5-15 yards and perhaps one long one.
I want Newman targeted in the passing game. I also want to see us chuck it up a few times to Dez on 3rd and long. Any 3rd and long play we run needs to have a chuck it up to Dez option.
Any pattern Dez runs......an out, an in or a slant to the sticks, as soon as he sees the ball isn't coming to him on that primary route, he takes off deep. If the pass rush is really killing us we should have him taking off deep at the snap.
Tony looks to option one, if the throw for 1st down yardage isn't there and the rush is, chuck it to Dez.
I want every 3rd and long play to end with a throw to an open receiver for 1st down yardage or a chuck it up to Dez. No dump offs, throw aways or sacks.
And yes I am advocating throwing into double coverage or single coverage where the DB is deeper than Dez. We need to give this kid 2 to 6 or more opportunities to change to game with big plays.
On defense I'm looking for a more traditional type approach. I respect that offense, but I believe we can do well against it.
Go with the Manning gameplan and expect Daulton to pose little threat to run.
Have Carr follow Green all over the field for a heavy dose of jamming and abuse at the LOS and of course help over the top everytime. Make Gresham (who'll drop a few) or someone else beat you.
