Update: Bengals NOT interested in ex-Cowboys’ OLB Greg Ellis

By Chick Ludwig | Thursday, June 4, 2009, 09:12 PM

BENGALS DRAFTED MICHAEL JOHNSON;
THEY DON’T NEED OLD-MAN ELLIS;
THE DAYS OF GEEZERS LOOKING TO
PICK UP A PAYCHECK ARE OVER

Can we please stop this nonsense, end the madness and halt all the hype?
The Cincinnati Bengals are no more interested in signing former Dallas Cowboy Greg Ellis than they are in hiring Charles A. “Chick” Ludwig Jr. as their safeties coach.
Ellis, a 12th-year veteran who turns 34 in August, is washed up. Done. Finished. Kaput.

He has 77 career sacks, and only one double-digit sack season — 12.5 in 2007 when he replaced Chicago’s Lance Briggs on the NFC’s Pro Bowl roster.
Where are you going to play him?
The 6-foot-6, 262 pounder is an outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme, not a pass-rushing defensive end in the Bengals’ 4-3 alignment.
How much are you going to pay him?
Cap room is tough to come by this time of year for every NFL team. The Bengals signed unrestricted free agents Laveranues Coles, Tank Johnson, Cedric Benson and Roy Williams in the offseason. And the signing of 11 rookie draft picks will proceed at a snail’s pace until mid-July.
Who are you going to cut?
When you add a guy, you must cut a guy. And the Bengals’ defense already has more than enough linemen and linebackers on the roster.
Ellis is only on the Bengals’ radar because his agenda-driven agent, James Williams, placed him there. It’s easy to see why. Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer coordinated Dallas’ defense from 2000-06.
The truth is Cincinnati grabbed its version of Ellis when it plucked Georgia Tech’s 6-7, 266-pound defensive end Michael Johnson in the third round of the April draft.
Young and hungry beats old and weary every time.

I hope he goes to a SB contender. He's annoying as hell sometimes but he was a better than solid player for us. His distractions weren't that drastic. He never held out and nearly cost us something dear. And he never pouted on the field or at games. Just don't go to the NFC East or the NFC period.

I'm pretty sure the Cowboys got a delay of game penalty because he wouldn't get off the field.

That's not pouting. I did that once. Told the guy to get the **** off my field. We didn't get a penalty though.

Yeah, saying Ellis is a linebacker and not a pass-rushing defensive end in the 4-3 ruins any credibility this guy might have had.

Then, throw in the fact that he thinks the Bengals don't need him because they drafted Michael Johnson in the third round.

LOL

I'd say that's a pretty strong 0 for 2.
If fact, he may have it backwards...because Ellis prefers playing DE and because Johnson is a very unpolished rookie, they VERY MUCH could use a guy like Ellis.

I remember reading this guys stuff when I lived in Dayton.

Yep he's a crackhead.

I don't read anything from the DDN. Its a terrible paper.

I take that back. During baseball season, I'll read Hal McCoy's coverage of the Reds. The only problem is the Reds are normally done by the All-Star break.

He is washed up. He was ineffective outside of two games last year. It serves him right for flapping his gums.

The Bengals might or might not be interested, but that "washed up, finished" Greg Ellis had five sacks in the final six games of the season. The entire Bengals defense had six.

2.5 against the Giants & 1 each against SF and Seattle. He created limited pass rush when we needed against most contenders.

All this bashing of this reporter and nothing to say to the substance of why the Bengals wouldn't be interested.

Michael Johnson is someone they think highly of. Has it not dawned on some of you that maybe this is Ellis' agent talking and perhaps this writer knows what he is talking about?

2 years in a 3-4(OLB) and 8 in a 4-3(DE) and he isn't a pass rushing DE? In a 4-3 scheme?

I'm not bashing here, but one must a least raise an eyebrow. Just a sprinkle of personal dis-like, IMO.

It is obvious he doesn't know very much about Ellis. But that doesn't mean what he is indicating about the Bengals interest level is wrong also. Most of these writers are idiots, but it doesn't mean they couldn't have a janitor telling them a few nuggets of truth every now and again.

******! Can't disagree with this. At all.

I loathe you................. ;)

So, 2.5 sacks (and five total QB hits) in one game against the division champions (and defending Super Bowl champs) is a limited pass rush?

He also had half a sack (two QB hits) against Baltimore, which you left out.
