Even if he lines up at TE, I'd still bring in a corner to cover him. He's not a real TE IMO.

I'd rather put a linebacker/end on his outside shoulder and have the defender attack the line of scrimmage/quarterback. Run him over.

Jones won't be able to handle the blocking required of an in-line tight end or coming out of the backfield. If the Bengals plan the use him as a tight end, the only way to do it effectively is bring him in then split him out (which essentially just means he's another receiver).

So TO is still on their radar?
I would have to say they probably are. They clearly are going to try and have a high profile passing attack and will be utilizing Jones in that respect. In other words, kind of like Kellen Winslow Sr. when he was in Air Coryell. Not a true TE. I suspect they want to create matchup problems for LBs who have to cover him. If I remember right he has some speed.

Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson disputes a report that the Bengals are planning to use Matt Jones as a tight end.

The Dayton Daily News characterized "in-house NFL guru" Carlos "Big C" Holmes' opinion as fact, when it was merely guesswork. The Bengals realize Jones doesn't have the bulk or the blocking ability to pull off the switch. If reports about his workout are true, Jones has a lot of work to do this offseason just to make the final roster.

Who knows what's going on in Cinn....

I keep hearing that Gresham is on their radar. But the 21st pick seems too early for him....but maybe Rd2.

They don't press, but they do throw a shoulder into you as you're coming out of your route.

Oh they may get one chuck in but he'll be near the five yard limit so I doubt they do too much. We'll see.

Bengals say Matt Jones will play wide receiver, not tight end

Posted by Michael David Smith on February 19, 2010 12:34 PM ET
When reports surfaced that the Bengals might play the newly signed Matt Jones at tight end rather than wide receiver, PFT's birthday boy pointed out that Jones isn't that big and isn't known for his blocking skills.

So it's good news for Bengals fans that the team says Jones will, in fact, play wide receiver.

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com reports that the Bengals aren't thinking about putting Jones at tight end. Per Hobson, tight end is a need for the Bengals, but it's a need they're likely to address through the draft, not by putting the 218-pound Jones at a position he's never played.

Jones reportedly had an awful workout and probably won't make the team anyway. But if he does, it'll be at wide receiver, not tight end.

Makes a lot more sense to me.

That wouldn't surprise me -- he's the athletic type like Bennett.

And I'm not sure that would be too high. Maybe a few picks is all. That guy has a lot of talent.

Interesting. I think this will be a huge mistake on their parts but that shouldn't surprise anyone given that it is the Bengals.

moving him to TE wasnt th bigger mistake, signing him in the first place was
