Like it or not. Berman is comfortably ensconsced in the public conscienceness as far as NFL anchors/high-light men go.

Personally I find him harmless, and think that this is just an award to reward his career, which helped to further the popularity of the game.

Wow. Someone with a clue.

Regardless what people think of Berman, he is an institution in sports reporting and broadcasting. ESPN has revolutionized sports and sports programming and has contributed to the popularity of sports. And Berman has been there since Day 1.

This is a career award. And if anyone should get it, Berman should.

I have to go along with these posts. Berman was a huge part of the early success of ESPN, and the success of ESPN is what led to the round the clock sports coverage we all enjoy now. Sure some of his schtick is a little old, but anyone that remembers knows that most of the ESPN guys in the early days had some sort of schtick. Mixing in humor and showing a pure, almost childlike love of sports on top of merely reporting was a big reason people tuned into ESPN, and Berman was the embodiment of all of it. In some ways i think of him like a Harry Carey figure. His enthusiasm is infectious.

2004 - Van Miller
2005 - Myron Cope
2006 - Lesley Visser

2008 - Dan Dierdorf
2009 - Irv Cross

Alright, when you look at this list, putting Berman on it is appropriate. He certainly has had the impact of a Leslie Visser or a Dan Dierdorf. My problem with Berman is, apart even from his blatant anti-Cowboys bias AND his general football ignorance (he's a baseball guy, remember?) is that he's more interested in his schtick than the games. An entertainer more than an educator. But if a talking head needs to go in, Berman's a fine choice for vapid unfunny commentary.

Some of the guys on the list are head scratchers. Dierdorff? Really?

I think Berman's impact in terms of helping develop sports broadcasting beyond broadcasting the actual event or a 5 minute segment of the local news is what gets him in.

I see way too many lousy network people (Lesley Visser ... are you kidding me? ... Irv Cross?), and not near enough nuts-and-bolts radio guys. Harry Kalas. John Facenda. Brad Sham. Verne Lundquist. Where are they?

After seeing that list, this award is a joke.

This is a good point about radio guys. Vin Scully also comes to mind. I grew up listening to him do baseball broadasts and to he is still the standard I judge baseball announcers by.

My initial thought was that maybe the people who give out the awared were more interested in guys with a broader national exposure whereas a lot of these guys were associated with specific teams and areas of the country, but then Jack Buck is on the list.

I suppose Visser was put in largely to represent the growing number of female sports broadcasters. I have nothing agains Visser, but there are a lot of folks who have been in the business a lot longer and who have earned the award more than she has.

Don't know why but your post reminds me of this quote:

Rockhound "You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?"

OK, but you're gonna hafta answer to the Coca-Colo Company.

Dang when Leslie Visser was young she was hot IMHO.

Yeah, I had it bad.

Almost like a basketball Jones but not as bad.

But she still makes my heart flutter . . . oh, Leslie . . .

Gotta agree. It leans more heavily toward television guys than radio guys, though it may be the "modern" effect, the same as how players of yesteryear don't get as much respect for Hall of Fame consideration as players who are part of the NFL's modern generation.

;)

I can't wait for college football to hear him and Kirk Herbstreit call games. One of the best duos in sports - the young and brash with the seasoned and knowledgable.

Almost August!
