I love me some good BBQ and here are 2 joints I always hit when given the chance. Both have excellent Q, as well as excellent sides and homemade deserts.
First up is Ray's BBQ in Norman Oklahoma, ex OU Sooner and NY Jet Darrol Ray started it up.
https://www.raysbbqok.com/

Second is Smoking Joes Rib Ranch in Davis, they are a little on the pricey side and everything is top notch quality including their wonderful Strawberries on a Cloud desert.
Its well worth the 70 mile drive.

For me it's always been Kreuz Market in Lockhart, it's been around for almost 120 years. It was old school BBQ for the longest time, it was 100 years before they started to offer sides and only the last couple years that they started offering sauce or forks. It was all about the meat, glorious piles of meat.

My normal order is a slice of brisket, slice of prime, a chop and ring of sausage. Throw in some onions, pickles a couple japs, a Big Red or Shiner and eat my way into a meat coma.

I haven't tried Snow's but the rest are all A1 for sure.

Well, Miss Tootsie is the pitmaster at Snow's and she is a legend. They are Saturday only, so you need to go early. I think we got in line around 6am. We were served around 7:30 and ate a full brisket meal for breakfast. That's really the only way to do it unless you're doing takeout. They sell out long before the lunch hour.

Snow's is remarkable and is certainly at the same level as Franklin. They are #1 and #2 in the state and those are interchangeable.

Daisy Mae's in NYC. But it is also the only real BBQ I have ever eaten. Living in NJ, I don't see too many BBQ places around and I am not one to travel miles to find one.

Snow's came in #1 in Texas Monthly's Top 50 BBQ joints. With the newer ones getting mentions, that greater Austin area was THE hotspot for Q. The had 3 Mueller's on the list.

Not sure why but I thought there was a T in the name...
That place is really good too and like 2 blocks from Blacks.
I got mixed sausage box there and ate it as I drove home, lol.

A sausage sandwich and Big Red was my goto meal for all of high school and college.
Little roadside stands in East Texas ...man... like 5 bucks.

Yea I have no doubt it's great and have seen it featured on the bbq shows but the limited serving times make it a challenge for me.
I usually drive down after work on Friday so hit the airbnb or hotel room like 11 to Midnight. --stopping at Bucees for a brisket sandwich, roasted pecans a drink lol
I get up about 8:30 on those days generally and go float the river.

It's pronounced like there is a "T" in it, rhymes with "brights"

Next time you're in that general area, drive down the road to Luling it's only a few minutes from Lockhart and go to City Market. They got great ribs and their sausage is almost identical to Kreuz. They make my all time favorite sauce, a spicy mustard based sauce, it's great on anything and I always buy a gallon of it to take home.

Down the road in Flatonia is a place called Joels BBQ. It is good as well.

I love spicy mustard so will have to try that.
Luling looks familiar so probably have seen signs for it or seen some Texas musician from there.

I have thought about Lockhart as a place to have a little vacation home. Glorified trailer would be fine. Fall through Spring it'd be pretty glorious and prices are still pretty good.
Anything right on the river/s is insane.

As full-time RVers, we can kind of pick where we want to hang out. We currently plan to spend February in the Lockhart area. Within 50 miles of Lockhart--in pretty much any direction--is the best BBQ in the world. February!

So, first of all, I have moved and am settling into Kansas City, Missouri at my new townhouse. I begin my new career tomorrow morning. So, I'm looking forward to that. So, that leads to point 2.

What is a conversation about Kansas City without BBQ? The previous time I was here was to look for apartments. During that trip, I ate at Smokehouse BBQ (along with Minsky's). Before tonight, those had been the best BBQ ribs I had ever had. But then we come to tonight.

Tonight, I had the pleasure of eating at Q39. In the words of my friend Caffeine Fox, OH MY GOODNESS!!! That was simply, the best BBQ I've ever had in my life!!!!!!!! The ribs and brisket were incredible! The beans and fries couldn't be topped. I loved every bite!!!!!!!

What's the best BBQ, you've all ever eaten?
Welcome! I've lived within an hour of downtown KC since 2004. There are literally dozens of places with high quality Q in the area. Q39 is definitely on the short list. Joe's Kansas City is a must try (used to be Oklahoma Joe's). They have great ribs and a good sandwich called a Z-man that has an onion ring and provolone on top of brisket. Could eat it daily. Slap's BBQ is extraordinary - do the burnt ends. Jack Stack is decent but has the best sides you will find with their pit beans, cheesy corn and cheesy potatoes. LCs, Gates, the original Arthur Bryants, they are all worth a try. BBs Lawnside, Rosedale, Woodyard, they are all good.

KC has plenty of good non-BBQ as well. La Bodega is fantastic. If you like Italian food Garozzos is top notch. Westport Flea Market has the best burgers. Beer Kitchen is phenomenal for brunch. Grunauer is a good Austrian/German place. Strouds has great fried chicken. I don't know if they're still there since COVID hit, but there was a little taco place inside Bichelmeyer Meats on Saturdays that was tremendous. If you like wings go to The Peanut. A lot of people like Minskys Pizza, I think it's average - that's my biggest gripe about KC, no truly phenomenal pizza (that I've found anyway).

Furry, I'd ignore GOP and take advice from someone who's dined out more.

I love it here in KC so far. I live near Minsky's.

I remember Franklin visited with Tootsie at Snow's BBQ on the sixth episode of his PBS show, BBQ with Franklin: www.pbs.org/food/features/bbq-with-franklin-season-1-episode-6-poultry-sauce/

Gates BBQ, my man. Few spots in KC.

Be warned, the cashier is going to yell at you when you step up. "Hi, may I help you"

Literally, they're going to yell that at you and if you get one that's a bit off they won't even be looking in your direction. Little odd the first time, but their BBQ is on-point.

I tried them in 2014. I remember them being good.
