Who are the best defensive players that have come through Dallas in the Garrett era?

1. Who is the best free agent defensive player we've signed in free agency?
2. Who is the best player whose contract we did not extend?
3. Who is the best player we've drafted?

1. Rolando McClain

Note that we released Ware.

I think it bears pointing out just how much of a failure Garrett has been in putting together a defense. I continue to suggest that he has not put many resources in place on defense. We routinely fail to bring in players who could immediately make a difference and continue to rely on players from previous head coaches that are now aging out (Ware, Lee, e.t.c.)

1. McClain
2. Church
3. Lawrence

Had we signed Julius Peppers in 2014, we probably would have gone to the Super Bowl. We've only made a couple of headline free agent pickups since Garrett came here. Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain. Two of the best defensive players we've drafted came with huge red flags for health and for drugs (Smith and Gregory). That isn't to even blame Garrett entirely here (I was all on board with Gregory in the 2nd).

But we have missed out on several players that could have helped this defense.

I should have also added a category for best player we've traded for on defense, but I think it would be hard to find a player that fits the billing...

f/a...David Irving...poached from kc practice squad.

draft...DE DeMarcus Lawrence.....could be LB Anthony Hitchens or DT Maliek Collins...or LB Jaylon Smith....I have hopes DE Taco,CBs Lewis&Awuzie pan out...but you gotta say Lawrence.

You're right, ware doesn't technically fit your criteria. New answer is Newman but can't remember if he was released or not brought back.

Draft does Lee count as a JG guy that was in 10 Wade was on his way out halfway through that season not sure Lee ever played under Wade. If not it is Lawrence.

Signing Carr wasn’t great but was always available

Not resigned Church. Would say Ware but he was under contract and let go.

You asked who's the best player on defense that didn't get an extension in the Garrett era

I asked who is the best player who has come through in the Garrett era who didn't get an extension. Newman predates Garrett.

He can't count. Jason Garret didn't bring him here.

Carr was a bad signing. Way overpriced for a CB2.

Garrett has brought in good players, he just cant get all 3 units to work in harmony to get us to the next level. its usually its only 1 unit if we are lucky 2, but than one brings us down.
