I've never seen a football movie thread here, but I have seen plenty of horror, sci-fi, comic book and other themes.
What are your favorite football movies, TV shows and documentaries? There's many to pick from. Baseball isn't the national pastime, it's football!
Best NFL Movie - Draft Day
This may be the only movie just about an NFL GM? Kevin Costner always makes great sports films. Love the draft day trading in this, love that the NFL gave them permission to use their trademarks so it felt more realistic, and my favorite part is the intense scrutiny on the draft picks trying to find anything why they should or shouldn't bank the franchise on this guy.
Biggest "Hey, I didn't realize he was in that movie back in the day" -- Chadwick Boseman, AKA Black Panther, as their draft pick.
My favorite scene:
Best High School Movie - Remember the Titans
I can think of a few but this one is my favorite. Denzell Washington always the man in any role, but great characters throughout the team, as well as a good message. If you can still find the DVD set, there was an awesome director's commentary track, but it involved the two real high school coaches. Based on what they said, let's just say that Hollywood took a lot of liberties with this story. LOL
Biggest "Hey, I didn't realize he was in that movie back in the day" -- Ryan Gosling of Lala Land and Barbie fame was actually a football player in this one.
My favorite scene: (curse words taken out unfortunately, doesn't have same impact)
Best Comedy - Necessary Roughness
A lot of good football comedies out there, but this is still my favorite. Hilarious characters that make up the team, and the prison game scene with a bunch of ex-Cowboys is great! Also filmed very close to Dallas BTW at University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. I have a family member who was an extra.
Biggest "Hey, I didn't realize he was in that movie back in the day" -- Rob Schneider. I think of him from the Sandler movies, but didn't realize he was in this one.
My favorite scene:
Best TV Series - Ballers
As much as I love NFL Network and ESPN series, I had a lot of fun watching this series from The Rock about an ex-NFL player who can no longer play and instead tries to make it in the high-stakes sports agent world. The real agent and former player The Rock was based on made a great comment though -- "Don't spend like these guys. This series is not how you save your money."
Biggest "Hey, I didn't realize he was in that movie back in the day" -- This series is still relatively new, so I'll instead include that rumor is many of these characters were based on real Dallas Cowboys including TO, Tyron Smith and Jerry Jones.
My favorite scene:
(Best opening theme song ever from Lil Wayne. You can search and see the better version, but this is the only clean version I could find. Great workout song!)
Best Documentary - The Two Bills (ESPN 30 for 30)
I'm a huge Parcells fan ever since his memorable stint in Dallas. Parcells & Belichick, the best 1-2 coaching combo in NFL history and this covers their stories from both of their own mouths. You can still cut the tension with a chainsaw when these two are together. I think it was the first time they ever filmed something together since their infamous split with the Jets & Patriots.
