I've never seen a football movie thread here, but I have seen plenty of horror, sci-fi, comic book and other themes.

What are your favorite football movies, TV shows and documentaries? There's many to pick from. Baseball isn't the national pastime, it's football!

Best NFL Movie - Draft Day

This may be the only movie just about an NFL GM? Kevin Costner always makes great sports films. Love the draft day trading in this, love that the NFL gave them permission to use their trademarks so it felt more realistic, and my favorite part is the intense scrutiny on the draft picks trying to find anything why they should or shouldn't bank the franchise on this guy.
Biggest "Hey, I didn't realize he was in that movie back in the day" -- Chadwick Boseman, AKA Black Panther, as their draft pick.
My favorite scene:

Best High School Movie - Remember the Titans

I can think of a few but this one is my favorite. Denzell Washington always the man in any role, but great characters throughout the team, as well as a good message. If you can still find the DVD set, there was an awesome director's commentary track, but it involved the two real high school coaches. Based on what they said, let's just say that Hollywood took a lot of liberties with this story. LOL
Biggest "Hey, I didn't realize he was in that movie back in the day" -- Ryan Gosling of Lala Land and Barbie fame was actually a football player in this one.
My favorite scene: (curse words taken out unfortunately, doesn't have same impact)

Best Comedy - Necessary Roughness

A lot of good football comedies out there, but this is still my favorite. Hilarious characters that make up the team, and the prison game scene with a bunch of ex-Cowboys is great! Also filmed very close to Dallas BTW at University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. I have a family member who was an extra.
Biggest "Hey, I didn't realize he was in that movie back in the day" -- Rob Schneider. I think of him from the Sandler movies, but didn't realize he was in this one.
My favorite scene:

Best TV Series - Ballers

As much as I love NFL Network and ESPN series, I had a lot of fun watching this series from The Rock about an ex-NFL player who can no longer play and instead tries to make it in the high-stakes sports agent world. The real agent and former player The Rock was based on made a great comment though -- "Don't spend like these guys. This series is not how you save your money."
Biggest "Hey, I didn't realize he was in that movie back in the day" -- This series is still relatively new, so I'll instead include that rumor is many of these characters were based on real Dallas Cowboys including TO, Tyron Smith and Jerry Jones.
My favorite scene:
(Best opening theme song ever from Lil Wayne. You can search and see the better version, but this is the only clean version I could find. Great workout song!)

Best Documentary - The Two Bills (ESPN 30 for 30)

I'm a huge Parcells fan ever since his memorable stint in Dallas. Parcells & Belichick, the best 1-2 coaching combo in NFL history and this covers their stories from both of their own mouths. You can still cut the tension with a chainsaw when these two are together. I think it was the first time they ever filmed something together since their infamous split with the Jets & Patriots.

Bonus Video - Before They Were Cowboys (SEC Storied)

I don't think many people are aware of this documentary. I posted it in the main Cowboys forum, and a few people thanked me for showing it.
It's an SEC Production, but on ESPN+ if you have the Disney+ Triple Package.

It's about Jimmy & Jerry as players, captains on the last Arkansas College Championship Team, and also had Barry Switzer as the Assistant Coach. Enjoyed it a lot.

This may be the ESPN link here.

Good question. After thinking about it I realized there are no football movies I really like. There are some that are okay, but none that I think are great. I

I'd have to say the one I did like the best was Jim Thorpe: All-American, but that isn't just a football movie.

I'm not putting any in order, just expressing what entertained me.

Necessary Roughness
The Longest Yard (original)
The Program
The Waterboy
The Replacements

Does Jerry Maguire count?
I wanted to put The Program as best college football movie, but it just seems odd. Feel like I’m forgetting some. Gotta be more classic football movies since then. Not including Rudy. LOL

No one likes to watch football documentaries?

Two series I enjoy are Top 10 and A Football Life on NFL Network. Good mind candy to pass the time on the Boom/YouTube if you like football.

Some more good 30 For 30 football episodes:
  • Catholics vs Convicts (TheU vs Notre Dame)
  • The U, both episodes (Huge Miami fan here)
  • The new one about the Ravens Defensive SB Team, good stuff and sad that Goose died right after that.
  • The 84 NFL QB Draft episode - Elway, Marino, et al
  • The Bo Jackson episode, forgot how legendary that guy was for his time, brings it all back
  • The Deion Sanders episode
  • The Maurice Clarett episode, eye opening. Didn’t realize how much of a raw deal he got.
  • The Al Davis episode

Landry's, Emmitt's, and Troy's were all great episodes. LT and Barry Sanders had good ones too. (At least I think those were both from A Football Life.)

I wasn't serious here. Still like it because it's set in the football world. Funny how the NFL wouldn't give it any names rights lol.
