Texas in October, is about as pretty as it gets
But Texas in the springtime, is even prettier yet
You miss it so much when you're gone
It's hard for you to say
Texas gets more beautiful, with every passing day
===================================

A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
"Go to sleep. Everything is all right"
================================

It seems we stood and talked like this before
We looked at each other in the same way then
But I can't remember where or when
================================

If you're down in Acuna and you ain't up to being alone
Don't spend all your money on just any honey that's grown
Go find the Mexican blackbird and send all your troubles back home
=============================================

I met her in a night club over on the lower east side
I was workin' with my head down tryin' to keep a groove alive
She looked like a bunny out of Playboy magazine
I just had to meet her; she was the cutest thing I'd ever seen
===============================================

Just take off your clothes and I'll drive you home I said
Knowing she never could pass on a dare
And knowing it sounded more desperate than reckless or bold
I just put it out there cold, too far gone to care
============================================

When it's midnight on the meadow
And the cats are in the shed
And the river tells a story
At the window by my bed
If you listen very closely
Be as quiet as you can
In the yard you'll hear him
It is the pony man
========================

Me and the boy's we cinched up our saddles and rode to Sonora last night
Gun's hanging proud, daring out loud for any one looking to fight
Card cheats and rustlers would run for their holes when the boys from the old Broken O
Rode up and reined on the street that they named, Sonora's death row
=============================================================

Now I'm lying here with Linda on my mind
And next to me, my soon to be, the one I left behind
And Lord it's killing me to see her crying
She knows I'm lying here beside her with Linda on my mind
=============================================

I know I stand in line until you think you have the time
To spend an evening with me
And if we go someplace to dance, I know that there's a chance
You won't be leaving with me
And afterwards we drop into a quiet little place and have a drink or two
And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like "I love you"

The screen door slams
Mary' dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch...

^ The Boss

She's my cherry pie
Cool drink of water such a sweet surprise
Tastes so good makes a grown man cry
Sweet Cherry Pie

Yah. Not his best opener, but probably my favorite Boss lyrics, overall, to I had to include it....

"You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a saviour to rise from these streets.
Well now I'm no hero,
That's understood.
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood.
With a chance to make it good somehow...
Hey what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow
Back your hair..."

Great stuff.

Props for sneaking Warrant into a best lyrics thread. :)

In the day we sweat it out on the streets of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected,and steppin' out over the line
h-Oh, Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
`Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Out here in the fields
I fight for my meals
I get my back into my living
I don't need to fight
To prove I'm right
I don't need to be forgiven

Oh, that's a good one I forgot about.

When I get older losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four?

Livin on the road my friend, was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
Your breath as hard as kerosene
You weren't your momma's only boy, but her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams

...Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling outta here to win. (Sorry, had to finish it) :)

That may be my favorite song ever from the Boss.

Mine, too. Just a great, great lyrical song.

"There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
you hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they’re gone..."

Who writes songs like that? They don't call him 'Boss' for nothin'.

Do you have the solo acoustic version of it that I think was the first cut of his Live 1975-1985 cd? Really haunting. It sounds like a different song entirely from the Born to Run version.

Love both of these. ZZ Top and Robert Earl Keen. Good call on both!

I know it's late
I know you're weary
I know your plans
Don't include me
Still here we are
Both of us lonely
Longing for shelter
From all that we see
Why should we worry
No one will care girl
Look at the stars now
So far away
We've got tonight
Who needs tomorrow
We've got tonight, babe
Why don't you stay

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

You never close your eyes anymore
When I kiss your lips
And there's no tenderness like before
In your finger tips
You're tryin' hard not to show it, baby
But baby, baby I know it.

You've lost that lovin' feeling
Oh, oh that lovin' feeling
You've lost that lovin' feeling
Now it's gone, gone, gone, oh, oh, oh.

You've painted up your lips
And rolled and curled your tinted hair
Ruby are you contemplating
Going out somewhere
The shadow on the wall
Tells me the sun is going down
Oh Ruby
Don't take your love to town

Mel or Kenny? Answer carefully...you're credibility as a country music fan rests in the balance. :popcorn:

Kenny, ... sorry.

I know Mel Tillis wrote it, and Johnny Darrell sang it first, .. but I have never heard any other version than Kenny Rogers.

Sad song.

There are so many, I don't know that I could even say which one would be best for me. However, this one comes to mind and I've always liked it.

"It's sad to think, we're not gonna make it
And it's gotten to the point where we just can't fake it
For some unGodly reason we just won't let it die
I guess neither one of us (neither one of us)
Wants to be the first to say good bye"
