I've put together what seems to me to be the best of the second tier, lesser known free agents for what the Cowboys need. This is my best guess from looking around for a couple of hours. It looks to me like each one of these players would be an improvement for the Boys. Go ahead and blast me if one of these guys is a terrible choice or no longer available. I'm just wanting to know what other guys thing about the following players:

Centers
Justin Hartwig, C, Titans
Jeff Mitchell, C, Panthers – born and raised in Dallas

Offensive Tackles
LJ Shelton, RT, Cleveland
Tom Ashworth, RT, Patriots
Kevin Shaffer, RT, Falcons

Offensive Guards
Stephen Neal, G, Patriots

Defensive Tackles
Maake Kemoeatu, DT, Ravens
Kendrick Clancy, DT, Giants
Rocky Bernard, DT, Seahawks – right size for 3-4?

Linebackers
Andre Carter, DE/LB, Niners
Derek Smith, LB, Niners
Keith Newman, LB, Vikings
Tommy Polley, LB, Ravens

To be honest with you I do not know who the best FAs are for the Cowboys, but I do feel that Dallas has enough cap room to pursue quality FAs.

Notice I did not say big name necessarily, but quality. I do not feel that there should be any excuses for BP and JJ to not fix the Cowboys this offseason.

Thats my target - NT With Kemo at the top. Clancy is a player and I hope he leaves NY

Carter is a pretty good player. His coverage is probably a bit suspect since he came out of Cal as a DE, but he's not bad at getting to the QB. We need another pass rusher opposite of Ware.

How cool would that be to have my wife's cousin (Clancy) playing for the Boyz?

I would add Kalimba Edwards to that list of LBs

Why is everyone falling all over this guy from the Ravens?Just because he is huge that dose not always relate to being good...
He had all of 30tackles and 1 sack last year....

NTs aren't going to have 90 tackles and 8 sacks.

With all the money tied up in Larry Allen and Marco Rivera I just don't see a guard being signed in FA, maybe one is drafted though. Same goes for a NT/DT, they have alot tied up in Ferguson so don't expect them to waste valuable FA money for a backup NT.

I see them signing a lesser tier RT, FS, K, LB and maybe a C and WR if they have enough cap room. I think a G and NT are only possibilities through the draft.

That's a very good one.
I think Kalimba could be a much better player as a 3-4 OLB in the NFL than he was as a 4-3 DE in Detroit.

Junk should get a prize for registering the board's 1000th explanation of this point!

Maybe later we can review PUP too.

Which is probably why he said in the first sentence, "I've put together what seems to me to be the best of the second tier, lesser known free agents for what the Cowboys need."

Which is still not the best FA. You can call the 2nd best the best of whats left. But not getting Bentley is still not getting Bentley. And Mawae is far from Bentley. Hes good, but not better or have more upside then Bentely.

So going against the title of the thread, we are not getting the best FA. We are getting the best of whats left. Maybe the title is wrong here. Maybe it should be the 2nd best FA pick ups for the cowboys. Bentley the best Fa center, if we dont get him, we aint getting the best.

Chris Hope, FS, Steelers

That would be a great succesful offseason!!!

Its the "best of the second tier." Sure, the title is misleading, but reading the first sentence should clear that up for you.

Since we're obviously not going to fill all the deficiencies with first tier players, these threads are very useful.

That's actually a very solid list, however I would pass on LJ Shelton...he was a major bust for Arizona, similar to Mike Williams in Buffalo. He was pretty much the same player for cleveland as well.

I would also take Mawae over Mitchell and Hartwig

That sounds like a pretty good wish list!

I'm all for bringing Bentley here, but it's probably not going to happen especially if other teams are willing to pay him a ton of money. That's why I'm not surprised there are no articles or speculation linking Dallas to him even though center is one this teams major needs. You never know what might happen though, we definitely have to address the position either way.

I would definitley look at Fabini, but for a low price and one year contract given his recent health status.

Vinateri is going to demand too much money, and Jerry Jones has pretty much said he's not spending a lot on a kicker. So I won't be surprised if longwell or bryant is here instead.

Hope would definitely be a solid addition, I believe he had more picks than Palumalu.
