worst one is dak all the clauses favor him, money favors him, no team friendly language..all the others noted that we know about all have a lot of team flexibility in them..but i agree the OL are best value..

WAH!!! So you haven't even seen him play on the contract yet but are griping about the contractual advantages he has in a thread about value for the contract signed? Tells me all I need to know.

Martin is getting top dollar, so would favor Tyron during his prime playing on a Bradyesque deal.

I'll be unpopular and say Dak Prescott.

We paid a starting QB with a couple Pro Bowls under their belt $2.7M total for four years. That's incredible return on value for a position where big money rules.

Of course, he'll make that much in a single game now which is a complete 180 in the opposite direction - bring us some Lombardis and I'll consider it a worthy investment.

The best value was absolutely Dak's rookie deal.
Then DLaw's rookie deal.

The best long term 2nd deal would be Tyron's. That deal is a perfect example of everyone winning.
Tyron has made 11m per year long term and will retire with 100M cash pocketed if he plays one more season.
He's never broken the cap bank though and had he been making 15-17M per year he likely would have been released by now.

One thing to keep in mind about all second contracts in the NFL is that the markets for all positions change and evolve over time, especially as the role of certain positions evolve.

For example, it’s fairly clear that the market for RBs has not grown exponentially like some other positions because the game has changed. The game as currently played and as most teams manage their cap, does not put a lot of value in the RB position. It’s one of the least difficult to find talent at a decent price. Because of that, IMO, the Zeke deal is currently the biggest drag.

As the passing game has become the centerpiece of NFL offenses, QBs’ value has blown up. Used to be in the 60s-90s, having a bell cow RB was THE most valued position in the NFL. Not now. The game is constantly evolving. Ten years from now, it will be different than now.

It’s also why when we all look at the crazy dollars in the Dak contract to remember- the way the QB market is currently growing in value, 3 years from now, Dak’s contract is going to be much cheaper than the money a QB gets in 2024. I know the amount these guys get is insane. But QB is the most important position on the NFL field by a mile. And finding one with any kind of reliability is difficult, thus the market.

Whatever anyone thinks of Dak, his abilities, his contract, etc, our FO made the decision that having a QB under contract long term is good for this team’s long term planning about EVERYTHING. None of us yet know whether that decision was a good one or not. But their other alternative was choosing to enter the QB wilderness which is potentially much worse in their mind than this contract.

Time will tell. I’m not a big fan of this FO’s decision making the last two decades plus, but if I had been in their shoes, I would have signed Dak too. I don’t think his contract will prove to be the disaster some say it will. Again, the future is always changing. Can’t wait for the 2021 season to see how this plan unfolds.

To the original question: Best contract in last 10 years: Tyron Smith
Worst in the last 10 years: (tie) Tyrone Crawford and Zeke

Zeke's total value 90M and his practical guaranteed of 50M are very much outliers.
His AAV of 15 is not crazy but those prior two are.
It's really hard to find a big RB contract that has paid off for anyone in the last 15 years.
It sucks how RB get compensated generally you can't ignore the rest of the league.

Ronald Leary deserves a mention in this thread. That dude was so stinking good at LG, plus he was on a fairly cheap contract.

But yeah, it's Tyron or Martin. Or LP if you include the specialists.

For what he's paid you should quit yer whining. He's the 15th highest paid OT. Aside from last year he was missing 3 games a year in each of his previous 4 seasons. He's undoubtedly one of the best in the game when he's on the field. 15th highest pay seems a steal for 13 games a year.
Wasn't Smith one if the highest paid until last year or maybe the year before. His contract has been restructured a couple times. He is great when healthy but ever since he started having back problems he just isn't the same guy and he's been like that for about 4 years

No. The only restructuring has been converting salary to bonus. That doesn't affect how much he is paid or where he falls on the list

The FO is notorious for handing out large contracts to average players.. But which one can you say he was or is worth every penny. To me its either Martin or Tyron...

Tyron was a great contract.

Martin was the highest paid Guard at his time. That wasnt a good contract regardless of his ability.

Everyone else is terrible value.

I’d even throw Amari in as terrible value even though he’s pretty good.

Dak is far and away their worst contract though.. He’s not a good enough player to validate that kind of money.. Really caps this teams potential going forward.

LOL...<shut yo mouth>....

Rookie contracts are no brainers, which is right up Jerry's alley. They are already kind of established so i wouldn't give credit to the FO. Its the second contract where it takes guts, knowledge, skill, and lots of luck to see who do you extend and resign, trade or let go. That is where the GM and COO earn their salary. In this case, we got the short end of the stick here. They earn their salary without paying any consequences on screw ups.
