I was going to do this as a poll, but I can't seem to find that function anymore, so I'll just do it as a post.

The question: What is the best way to draft a quarterback for this team?

A) Stay put at our #26, draft the best prospect in the first round.
B) Trade up as far as possible, even to #1 if you can, and draft one in the first round.
C) Draft one in the second round.
D) Draft one in the third round or later.
E) Sign a rookie free agent.
F) Other

This is unrelated to the possibility of bringing in a stop-gap free agent. You could do that, and still also do any of the above.

Just because we need a quarterback doesn't mean a good one will be available.

The draft board should dictate plan A,B,C, etc.

We are stuck with Dak. If we do draft a QB, it would probably be a later round project. Dak is our starter in 2023.
It's crazy how this franchise won't even consider drafting a QB in the early rounds. Packers drafted Rodgers when they had Favre, then drafted Love when they had Rodgers. The Patriots drafted Garrapollo when they had Brady. The 49ers drafted Lance after Garrapollo had led them to a Superbowl appearance and another championship game, but Dak gets no pressure put on him?

The only way I think this is a realistic scenario is if they are able to trade Dak. With him on the roster and you draft his replacement it just gets very weird and you split the locker room.

If Tom Brady is there you draft him in the 6th round. It doesn’t matter where you draft a QB. Just do your evaluation, and see what your chances are of getting him, and decide how you want to play it.

I was a big advocate of drafting Hurts in the 3rd if he fell that far. He didn’t fall that far, and the Cowboys probably wouldn’t have hurt Dak’s feelings by drafting Hurts but it would have been a great move.

I don't think it would be a bad thing to have another legit QB on the roster, that if Dak got hurt he might not get his job back. He shouldn't be above getting Wally Pipp'ed. Romo was making a lot of money too. They need to always be churning the QB position to upgrade it / be in position to future proof it.

No way I’d use a first round pick on a QB this year. At 26 the odds of a good one gets slim and Dak is gonna be here likely two more years. I’d look at a developmental guy later
The transfer portal is gonna change the position at some point because guys aren’t gonna be sitting, they will move on where they can play so some of the off the wall schools are gonna get a talent who will get lots of reps and develope
For the QB position this is gonna really help

This draft stinks for QBs outside of Bryce Young. If draft is the answer I'd rather tank for Caleb Williams. I'd see if Baltimore wants to trade their disgruntled QB too in a swap.

We coddle him.
He needs to either step up or get shipped out.

I don't think Jerry and son will ever use a 1st round pick on a QB. They lucked into Romo and Dak without using a top pick. That is enough for them to believe that they are better and smarter than everyone else and look to find another like Dak and Romo.

Here is the Average Productivity Chart for all QB's drafted since 2000, I have divided the 1st round between the top 5 overall picks in the draft and the remaining 1st rounders. PB is Pro Bowls, ST is years as a starter and GS is the number of starts.

You will notice that the 6th to 7th round picks have a slightly higher average than the 4th and 5th picks. This is an anomaly due to the high productivity of a certain 6th round pick drafted in 2000. Brady's numbers are so insane that he shifted the average for an entire group of 92 other QB's in his category. We'd love to draft a QB under the similar circumstances but that only happens every lifetime and the 49ers may have snagged the next one.

\
Draft PB - ST - GS
Top 5 1.5 - 5.9 - 93.7
6-32 0.9 - 3.4 - 59.0
2nd 0.9 - 2.7 - 48.3
3rd 0.4 - 1.2 - 22.9
4th & 5th 0.1 - 0.5 - 13.4
6th & 7th 0.2 - 0.7 - 17.5

The chart reads top 5 overall picks as averaging 1.5 Pro Bowls. almost six seasons as a starter and almost 96 games started.

This implies an obvious truth. The higher you draft, the higher the probability of successfully drafting a productive QB.

Of course, there are exceptions. Some team's coaches are experts at evaluating and developing successful QB's.

Draft a QB every year.

Every fourth year spent your premium pick on one. Every other year at least a third rounder.

There is no quick solution for something we messed up for 27 years.

The unpopular fact .
Cooper Rush could run this offense better than Dak Prescott. It has been tweeked to be easier than the offense Rush drove to a 4-1 record.
Start out drafting a accurate QB with a average NFL arm.

If Quinn leaves we'll have a much higher draft pick next year.
