What's the best way to fix the OL?

I wonder if having Free compete for his job with Parnell daily will make both better.

Should we draft a RT and get rid of Free and make Parnell just be a backup?

At center Costa played well but can you count on him to be healthy?

The guards haven't been atrocious but not to the level of where great ones are.

Many different options. Which do you take knowing you also need to fix the DL

Free and Parnell shared snaps last week and Parnell failed his audition in the last game and was benched.

We have run out of options. We will go home with the girl we brought.

As far as fixing it I'll let others comment.

Draft Jonathan Cooper in the 1st.

Sign a quality RT in FA.

I think a line of:

Smith/Livings/(Costa or Killa or Bern at center)/Cooper/FA RT would be a solid enough line to get us over the top.

If Murray could stay healthy that would be a big plus.

Barrett Jones and Vollmer. Put Vollmer at RT, Jones can play guard or center, then let the pieces fall. Best case scenario it's

Smith.Livings.Costa.Jones.Vollmer (subject to change)

Also, Jones could fall to the second, leaving us able to draft a big name I.e Womack,Cooper etc.

Early this season, the Texans would alternate Rookie Ben Jones on some series with starter Antoine Caldwell. Caldwell normally got all the reps in the 4th quarter if the game was close. Caldwell got injured and Jones is now starting.

The fact that they stopped alternating Free and Parnell towards the end of the game does not prove that Parnell failed.

blow it up minus Smith?

Okay, sure. But if you blow something up, you have to rebuild it. How? Draft? FA? Okay, but who?

I think in order to have a good o-line you need to have a dominant center. I don't see Costa, Cook or Kowalski as the answer either. So I would look to add a center through the draft or possibly through free agency.

Livings at guard hasn't been as bad as some believe so I think you can get by with him going into 2013. Berny has looked better at center at times than at guard but I think he is better suited to be a backup. So I would add a guard via the draft to shore things up.

Free has been showing his warts for sometime now and it's time to turn the page. Parnell deserves a shot to see what he can do in my estimation. If it were my decision I would shore up the center and guard positions and let Parnell start in 2013. If Parnell cannot cut the mustard you bring in another tackle for 2014. Tyron at left tackle is not a concern at this point in time as I think he will become a force in 2013.

Who said Parnell failed?

I didn't watch with a close eye so he may very well have failed but he couldn't have been as miserable as Free has been at times this year.

With better players via the draft and free agency.

Garrett addressed this already. Doesn't mean they won't try to get Parnell up to snuff in the offseason but he can't be depended on in the game (ie, less dependable than Free).

see above

The OL doesn't need a tune up it needs a complete overhaul. Obviously we keep Smith but start upgrading the entire bunch.

We need to adress this in the offseason in both free agency and the draft. All positions: Center, Guard and Tackle. We need at least 4 new faces on the team to upgrade the likes of Dockery, Parnell, Arkin and Kowalski. Let the new guys fight it out with the holdovers in camp and line up the best group.

With the clusterfudge at NT, the potential loss of Spencer and our #2 RB leaving via FA, I don't expect the team to upgrade more than a couple positions on the offensive line.

I think free is gone and Bern becomes a backup.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Costa being penciled in as the starting center next season.

why do you assume its just players? are we that short sighted? maybe the scheme has to change. i have faith callahan can make this work, but hes going to have to blow things up and some people should stay out of his way.

Frankily put, you cant keep the current players, not all of them. SO some are going to have to change, with who? well that depends where you start? PLayers set the scheme, or the scheme sets the players?

May thing is take the current players, EVEN if they arent popular and see if you can get something that works, if you cant, start making changes and work a a scheme THAT works for the players and what they can do? are you with me here.

So the proposed question is, can callahan be left alone to decide and than either see whats on the FA wire, or will he be told this draft is for the offensive line and let him get two good young bucks, THAN again you have to scheme with what you have for the future.

its hard to predict what they are going to do, because Jerry can easily say i dont want to spend on the line, i have a killer TE i want to bring in or something silly.

i would rahter the draft go OL, but again whos out there, i like the MO draft even THO i wanted Oline more than anything else, he was there.

Well given the other needs on the team, to expect 3 guys being replaced on the offensive line... Doesn't seem realistic to me.

I agree that we only have limited resources. I just think that I would rather build from the inside out. I figure a stout center and right guard combination can make Parnell look better than he actually is at right tackle. A stout center could also make Livings look better as well.

i would see that as WAY more realistic but id like to know what is teh draft going to be targeting. I think either way it could help callahan look at what he has and where he wants to go with the OL.
