We are all aware that this defense has really struggled stopping the run for years. They haven't been good at since Wade Phillips was the team's HC, calling the defense. Really believe this defense needs to return to a 3-4 base defensive scheme (run downs). The scheme was actually designed to do a better job stopping the run. Good defenses effectively run "multiple schemes", but you need the personnel to accomplish that.

The defense is in need of "big personnel" and move away from that undersized, quick player off the snap. Need to get bigger not only along the DL, but also at linebacker:

A 3 man line usually consist of a NT, 5T DE and a 3T DT. All players need to have size, strength and length to be able to occupy multiple blockers.

Your LB's have to be bigger then those weakside types we have been drafting for years.

Believe we already have the OLB's in place, a good weakside backer, but extremely thin along the DL and inside at linebacker.

Assuming we get one of the DL from our current group, that means we are looking at needing 2 DL and 2 LB
though one could argue we might not have anyone who can play 3-4 DL
So that would be five new starters.
Not something that is going to happen in one year even if you work FA and of course we won't

I don’t think we need multiple linebackers, just a true Mike, where Overshown can play the will. We have a combo of Parsons, Kneeland, Sam Williams who can fill the olb. As for the DL, we know Mazi will be one of the starters, need 2 lineman with size that can occupy blockers, those types usually can be found later in a draft. The elite ones that go high are those athletic freaks, where they may take 1 and pair him with more of a run stuffer later on or even in fa where the cost isn’t too high

I don’t think 3-4 or 4-3 really matters that much anymore. You’re going to be playing nickel the majority of the time, and there’s no such thing as a “running down” anymore…unless it’s a tush push type of situation.

Just get good players. Talent is the Cowboys biggest problem

Frankly I do not think Mazi is going to be any better in the 3-4 then he was in the 4-3
we will need more ILBs because while Overshown might be able to do it, not sure Liafu can. So we will need at least two more to be sure.

I understand this, but you need players who can play multiple formations

This! 3-4/4-3 is only played 20% of the time. Except against teams like SF or Balt

Drafting "big personnel" is how we ended up with Mazi.
Poor scouting and player evaluation is how ended up with Mazi. There are too many cooks in the war room and nobody with any talent for it. I'm sure if we put the top 100 college players names in a hat and let a howler monkey draft the first 3 rounds, it could do as well.

I will say this. The biggest issue isn't alignment or size. It is the type of guys they look for. They want prototypical pass rusher types. They prefer guys who test off the charts in shorts regardless if it matches their on field tape. They disregard a guy who excels at stopping the run if they don't think he can rush the passer at a high level.
