Biggest Miscalculations?

We all knew we had a subpar OL, but most of us liked the addition of Free to the starting lineup after watching him in preseason, and most of us liked the improved depth at all positions, getting rid of the likes of Flo, Proctor, and McQ. But we knew what we were and what we have and figured the offense would find a way.

The problems on offense through the 1-5 start are probably laid mostly at the feet of Garrett's playcalling and lack of run/pass balance, including not using Felix enough early on, the stupid penalties and untimely turnovers.

But what about the defense? What has killed this unit the most? What was the biggest miscalculation?

I think it was our belief that we were okay at the safety positions. Even I supported Sensabaugh because he had such a great year covering TE's last season, especially after what we'd dealt with in the previous years.

Today, I think our safeties are probably the biggest problem we have on defense, both against the passing game and the running game, along with their tackling in general.

Sensabaugh and Ball are not making tackles, nor are they supporting the run game with any physicality at all.

Ball is killing us in the passing game, making almost no plays and seemingly often out of position. Even on a deep pass breakup against the Giants, Jenkins managed to be behind the receiver, while Ball was the short man. It was a perfectly thrown ball by Eli Manning, and only a great play by Jenkins stopped a big play. We were playing a variation of cover 2 with the safeties in deep halves, yet Ball ends up chasing the play. Most weeks I seldom even see him in the picture.

Even when teams only put 7 guys in the box vs. the run, they still require the support and solid tackling by the safeties.

There's plenty of blame to go around, but the Cowboys' front office and coaches definitely seem to have miscalculated big time regarding our safety situation. I hope we find at least one future starter among the younger kids.

On defense they really need for Sean Lee to be a hit. You can get by with either Brady or Brooking on the field, you just can't have them on the field at the same time. Brady doesn't have the best lateral agility and Brooking looks as if he's running in sand. So the ILB position needs a youth movement.

Safety is a need as well. Ball is just not meant to be a full time safety IMO. I noticed the other night he was slow getting up after a few plays, he just isn't built for alot of contact. So I would say that Ball needs to be replaced for sure. If you get better play from FS that might make Sensy look better. Although I think that you have to look around and see what's available and consider replacing Sensy along with Ball.

That Hudson Houck was still "the best OL coach in the game".

That Spencer was going to be a Pro Bowl caliber pass rusher.

That it makes sense to ask a rookie undrafted free agent full back to be responsible for your franchise QB's health.

Takes me back to the Texans preseason game when that same player made the same mistake. That's as angry as I ever remember seeing Romo on the field.

You can start and end with the OL. Does not matter what you got anywhere else on this team...no OL means easily defeated by good teams. Look at the skill position players Peyton Manning has. Granted Peyton is the best...but his protection allows also rans (other than Reggie Wayne) make plays. They have not missed a beat since Marvin Harrison retired.

Thinking Alan Ball would be a difference maker. Expecting Anthony Spencer to bring it for 16 games. We have ZERO pass rush...which is a recipe for disaster with the lack of depth we have at CB.

That the 34-3 butt whooping in Minnesota, didn't mean anything because we beat the Eagles the week before.

^^^ Double This.

Also, that Flozell Adams was the weak spot of the offensive line.

Yep we thought winning a playoff game was great and didn't correct our weaknesses. We basically got rid of offensive linemen instead of finding some that would have worked. I ilke getting Dez and Lee but the rest of our draft needed to be offensive linemen.

At safety there has to be better safeties then what we got.

Biggest miscalculation was our glorious leader promoting boxing matches and filming episodes of Entourage while 31 other GM's were bringing in/contacting free agents.

Priorities.

Columbo and Big being major letdowns.

Scandrick and Jenkins having poor years.

Zero depth (although this is a problem on many teams)

That Garrett was going to be able to get all three running backs going.

I think Dave Campo takes less blame for how poor our secondary has played than he deserves.

The guy can't coach the secondary.

Moving Free to the left and not getting a tackle to anchor the left side. Should have gotten a big body to slow someone down. Not dumping Davis either.

Frankily anything that deals with the OL, player and coach wise.
