BOTH were much bigger busts. One was taken second overall; one was first

Biggest busts come from those taken in the top ten and neither Quinn nor Manziel were; and of course both were picked by the Browns so you sort of need an asterisk * there

Steve Pisarkiewicz 1st rounder by the Cardinals in 1977.

Interesting piece of trivia - he ended up signing for the Dublin Celts in the Irish league in the 1980s. Friend of mine was the GM who signed him. Broke his collarbone in pre-season, so he never played a down. But ended up being an excellent QB coach. Not sure why he was a bust - was an extremely hard worker who was engrossed in the sport.

Gotta add Couch in there too

Lots of qb busts in the top 10 picks over the years.
trivia: only 3 QBs picked first overall over the years have won SBs: Jim Plunkett, Troy and Doofus.

just looked at a better source and that trivia is wrong
Terry Bradshaw, John Elway, Peyton Manning must be added. Going to have to remember that first site is garbage.

In the SB era 27 QBs have been picked first OVERALL with Bradshaw the first in 1970.
So six out of 27 have rings.

I saw a stat pop up real quick. That no QB picked top 5 has won a SB for the team that drafted him since 2006.

JaMarcus Russel has my vote for biggest QB bust.

Jumongous has my vote as well. But this was an Al Davis pick. Because he could throw a football on his knees like seventy yards old Al took him. This guy had red flags on him because of attitude and other things but Al was not the only one that would have taken him in the top five.
The best example yet of a big and fast and strong guy with a cannon arm being taken despite everything else.

Its nowhere near as bad but you look at those like Milroe who might go in the first rd; no way should it happen but some GM will be dumb enough.

I commented on Milroe in the draft forum. He's a strict 1st read/run QB. Great arm and can run, but nothing else. These GMs are supposed to be smarter than this. But hey, Manziel and Tebow were taken in the first round, right? Manziel was a classic. When his first read wasn't there, he'd break the pocket. He lived off busted plays. You can't win in the NFL like that.

Heath Schuler probably belongs somewhere in there.
1st round and 3rd overall pick.

BTW,.....These busts taken in the top 3 picks (Russell, Leaf, Ware, etc) are WAY worse than guys taken late in the first round (Manziel, Tebow, etc).
I mean....maybe even 300% worse, as far as what the franchise used to get them.
It's not even the same conversation, imo.

There are bigger busts, but Matt Leinart needs mentioned with all that hype coming out of USC. Vince Young falls into that same category.

before the Rookie Salary Cap the first pick was getting huge money that would cripple the team for some time. And yet the mistakes kept happening.

When you look at the QBs picked in the top ten, the bust rate (anyone not getting a second contract) is over 50%

Yep
A double hit.

Equivalent of 3 late 1st rounders if you use a top 2 pick PLUS 100 mil contract

I am surprised it took the NFL as long as it did to put in a rookie salary cap with all the disasters happening nearly every year.

It's Jamarcus Russell and there isn't a close second. The coaches once sent him home with blank tapes and told him they were blitz packages he needed to watch. He reported back the next day and tells the coaches he watched them. That's the kind of work ethic he was bringing.

What makes this pick worse is that this was KNOWN about him prior to the draft.

RG3 came into Dallas for Thanksgiving and just lit up Dallas’s badly . Then his career went south . Big things were expected .
