Biggest question mark can this defense improve their run def?

They are counting on Smiths play to keep improving. People will scoff at that, but his play got incrementally better over the season and the run defense did as well.
how did run defense improve? because they played against bottom 3 offenses in the league....crap playing against crap. makes you less crappy I guess.

What do they all have in common? Elite offenses that control the football.
this control the football stuff and putting entire onus on offense. most good teams average about 32 minutes of TOP...give or take a few minutes. you know how? their defenses are also able to get off the field and give the ball back to the offense. they have low 1st down conversion rate. they have low 3rd down conversion rate. its not just on the offense.

If the grand plan for run stopping was relying on an improved first round pick and paying osa then we are good

I don’t know what next year will bring but the problem was not because they didn’t draft a fatty early it was paying osa who I like and not admitting that Mazi isn’t it

The second they paid osa meant they were not drafting anyone till late

I’ll hold out hope this new staff can improve things

:clap:Can't fix all problems with one draft/season. The took a major step addressing the offensive run game with this draft. As mentionif we can control/improve TOP, that will go a long ways helping the D.
they could have drafted a defensive player in the first and 2nd round and get a physical guard in the 3rd..... instead...we drafted a RG with the 12th...12th pick of the draft. one of the most premium picks. expecting to have a parsons type player. we picked a RG!!!

You say they did nothing without any proof they did nothing they got players they got coaching staffs we've got a schedule to play but yet we have five months between now and then to put it together and then play some games how could you say they did nothing and not know if these players are actually going to workout or not in this system... Do you guys understand that right you're judging everything by a lack of names or names but they need to get through some of these camps otas training camp and just start working through the ingredients to try to make a gourmet meal we'll figure that out once we see the product on the field they'll know it i'm pretty sure when they go into preseason and all these scrimmages and camps and start seeing these guys play they'll have a better idea of what they might need to improve..

Still don't get it I mean you guys have a list like a shopping list and it has to have specific names on it or you think it's a disaster how about like Greenlaw I just saw that the other day everyone's like man we should have brought that linebacker in because we shouldn't have brought sandbar in oh man now the dudes got something torn and he's probably going to miss most of the season we saw this at the trade deadline last year how many receivers change teams and you said we all should get one most of them did nothing absolutely nothing to help their team get better I mean you guys live on these names on the back of the jerseys why don't we let this coaching staff we're picking these players out to draft and free ages let's see what they can do with them...
this statement goes for every team and every team can say, they have 5 months to improve...

facts are on paper and based on personnel we have added to the defense, we are not going to see much improvement. bunch of JAGS and journeymen and few hold overs that sucked and now are older.

I think it's going to be better because you can't go further down than 29th really you can only go up I don't want to hear how there's three more spots we could go down health alone kept this down last year I think it's a better coaching staff this year and I think they're bringing in players they think are going to fit their system but again it was mostly health but with a new coaching staff and tank didn't even play last year so you might as well take them off your list Golston he's a good player but you just act like somehow we lost a pro bowler or a Hall of Famer no we lost a backup and Kendricks was here one year and yes I like his game,

but I like this linebacker room better as a whole... I'm not sure where the Florida draft picks but that seems like a pick that Matt Eber flus went after because there's no other reason that Jerry would have moved up because I thought it was the most head scratching move of the day and they went and picked this linebacker there has to be a reason for it so I just think the linebacker room is going to be improved what should it help the run game with big fatties in front of them whatever ones they picked they got quite a few now they got the two draft picks they have Rogers and they still have Mazi , Osa, and Joseph. I mean they must be able to find three of those guys to fit the rotation at nose tackle i'm not worried about the three tech, OSas going to handle most of that, and they'll put Thomas in there to spell him a little bit but as far as the fatties and the linebackers I think it's going to be improved... I mean how much I don't know but at twenty nine I'm betting they can improve from that.

IMHO Liafu and Kneeland will be better with experience. and Sanborn fits as good or better than Kendricks given its "MattE guy".. Just like Mike brought over his own linebacker in Kendricks this is a guy that can run his defense if what I hear he's got a lot of upside and he can one thing he does is play the run very well but we can all say it but the fact is we need to watch the games not win game one not game 2 all 17 games and then see where the rankings come out and then we can see if it was improved...
I know they dont really teach counting in Texas but it might surprise you to learn that there are numbers after 29

If we don't have the players good enough to stop the run, use scheme. Commit more players and put the pressure on the defensive backs. Some teams will kill us over the top, but there aren't many other choices.

Here is the problem in a nutshell. Dont get me wrong I like the kid out of BC and do think he will be a player, however this defense looks to be built similar to the Quinn defenses we just had. It is built to play from ahead. All pass rush with run D an after thought. Problem is I dont think this team will be playing from ahead very often. I dont like the offense any better. You want to run the ball to keep the defense off the field? Opponents will stack the box and make Dak beat them from the pocket. We all know how that ususlly ends.
Exactly
Becoming a smaller defense by replacing our only real DE with another LB is not the way to become a good run defense

As mentioned in another post, Schotty and Eberflus knew the talent level in the draft at the DT position yet they still chose to punt on drafting one high. We can only assume they were/are happy with the players they have. I'm not saying I agree or not but it's obvious they could have easily added another high level DT but chose not to.

This^^^^once they paid Osa $21M, drafting a ANOTHER DT 12th over was never going to happen. We had way too many holes at other positions.....

It's why I said I'll wait and see what Eberflus plan ...........

The Cowboys were never going to fill all their needs in this draft and supposedly they offered Greenlaw a contract but once again the Joneses showed that they will not do what it takes to make the team better. The Cowboys could have overpaid for Greenlaw. We know a certain team in Pennsylvania would have. I loved the draft but our free agency plan left weaknesses on the table.

If we signed Greenlaw everything would have looked different. I bet the Cowboys didn’t sign him because they didn’t want to lose a comp pick.

-Cowboys Defense was 29th against the run last season
-Tied for the most rushing td's given up
-Dead last in red zone defense

Overshown out indefinitely, team lost their three top run defenders in DLaw, Golston and Kendricks. Murray who they traded for is on his third team in as many years, Sanborn is a former undrafted fa. Turner/Thomas are former 1st rd busts.

In a draft that was loaded at the DT position, they use a 7th rd pick at the position.

Tell me, how this run defense will improve? On paper they got much worse!
It's too late now, but they should have traded Micah for two or three mature players instead of they have him here.

Make sure to feed him milk.

I'm hoping the 341 lb. Samoan does the job. Super strong but he is a rookie.

The best way to stop the run with the team we have is to light up the scoreboard. We don’t have the players to stop a team running all day. So force them to stop running by scoring TD’s. Get better on offense in the red zone, run well and control the clock. You have what you have and there is no big stud DT you can go get. Fibd anither recieved who can take some pressure of Lamb. There will be WR’s out there to get. Only chance of a DT is an older expensive vet getting cut and I don’t know of any in that position

They signed up LB Justin Barron pretty quick.. they must have liked him.

I don't watch College football.. if someone knows more about him I would love to hear it.

I keep reading his run defense is pretty ordinary.
