The same thing Parcells did to Sean Payton last year.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick is reportedly discouraging defensive coordinator Eric Mangini from taking the Jets job.
We know that he didn't let Mangini interview this week. The rest is probably speculation, but the Jets position has to be the worst available right now. The team has salary cap issues, an uneven roster, a difficult division, and Mangini is likely to get other opportunities in the future.

And lemme tell ya, from all reports here and on WFAN the Jets want Mangini very much.

Belichick might be right. Tough spot for his first head coaching job..Just the QB situation alone is a nightmare...along with the other stuff you pointed out...and dealing with New York to boot...

Also remember that Belichick bolted from the Jets the day after he was hired to take over for Parcells. I'm sure he is filling Mangini full of Jet horor stories too.

Mabye Bellichek had a falling out with the Jets and just doesn't want him to go there. Kind of like the same situation with Parcells and the Patriots.

It could be but it's pretty easy to believe he's just looking out for the guy. It's a no win situation and who knows how badly Cleveland could have hurt Belichick's career.

gotta love the "ny is too tough" discussion.... i mean you want him to go to a flunky franchise like NO, AZ, CLE, etc instead?

taking a head coaching job is always a "win". he has little expectations in NY right now given the cap problems, QB injuries, etc.

nowhere to go but UP.

How many athletes/coaches have come to NY and failed only to go on to be successful elsewhere?

How many have come to NY having experienced success and fallen flat once they got here?

Alot.

Living here, I always downplay it...and I really don't see what is so difficult about NY but go ask Kenny Rogers, Ed Whitson, Pete Carrol, Jim Fassel, Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Piazza (who was BOOOED his first year here), ARod, Jeff Weaver, Jose Contreras, Rich Kotite, Allie Sherman, Mike Keenan, Patrick Ewing.... and on and on and on what they think

I'm not saying the guy can't succeed here but he should take the NY factor into consideration.

Hmm 34-year old coach with 1 year of experience as a coordinator. Opportunity to go to a tough media market with a horrible team.

I'd say that Belli is doing the right thing here.
