His most recent resume listing is Jets assistant head coach/offensive line coach

2008-2011

From left to right this is the 2011 Jets offensive line

LT - D'Brickashaw Ferguson
LG - Matt Slauson
C - Nick Mangold
RG - Brandon Moore
RT - Wayne Hunter

Ferguson was drafted in the first round in 2006, and made his first pro bowl in 2009. He mas made the pro bowl from 2009-2011.

The Jets drafted Matt Slauson in the 6th round in 2009. He played for Callahan in Nebraska. He beat out Alan Faneca in his 2nd year in New York. Starting 28 games in his career.

Nick Mangold was drafted in 2006, and made his first pro bowl in 2008. He has made the pro bowl every year since. Drafted in the first round.

Robert Moore was undrafted in 2002, and made his first pro bowl in 2011.

Wayne Hunter is a recent addition to the Jets (2010). They signed him to a 4 year contract extension last year. He was a journeyman going from seahawks, to the jaguars, and eventually the Jets. 4 years 15 million dollars.

I believe he will make Smith and Free pro bowl caliber players. I think he will develop the interior line. Either with what we have or if it's not good enough, I think he will find players that will fit the need.

The year before Callahan came to the Jets they were ranked 19th in rushing yards and only had 6 rushing touchdowns.

In 2008, just his first year, they jumped to 9th in the nfl in rushing yards and had 20 touchdowns.

Note: They had the same primary running back BOTH years. Thomas Jones. And they actually ran the ball LESS than the previous year. 20 less times, but produced about 300 more yards.

We got the guys we did for a reason, and I can't help but consider that Callahan might have been involved in those decisions.

“This team has a lot of ingredients that can make this team great,” Callahan said, adding, “That’s the exciting aspect of this job; all the skill pieces in place. You’re always trying to get better. Now it’s a matter of shoring up the offensive line.”

Livings is a player who we should have pretty high expectations for when combined with the strength training of woicik and the coaching of callahan. I think we've all heard that Livings' career high metrics are higher than even Carl Nicks. So if you have a coach who has a history of getting the most out of players, and a strength coach who has a history of having players in the best shape in the nfl... Why would you be so uneasy here?

I'm much more concerned with Mac and Costa, but again I still think Nagy and Arkin could play a role there as well. There will be competition.

I absolutely think Callahan knows what he is doing here. They targeted two specific players to fill specific roles here. I don't want to go all money ball here, but this really reminds me of Billy Bean here.

So far 17 offensive linemen have been drafted.

12 tackles
4 guards
1 center

ONE CENTER has been drafted so far... would it have been nice to have gotten him? Sure. But I think getting the best defensive player in the draft makes up for that.

Centers remaining?

Philip Blake
Ben Jones
Michael Brewster
David Molk
Gino Gradkowski
Garth Gerhart
Quentin Saulsberry
William Vlachos
Moe Petrus
Scott Wedig

and more... who knows what Callahan thinks of these guys.

We have two fourth round draft picks. If we have to have a guy, I'm sure we'll trade up to get him.

There are also quite a few guards available. I think if you ignore the tackles drafted (although some will surely move to guard), you can put things into better perspective on a position verse value basis.

Cowboys could also always bring Holland back if they wanted. Either he does fit their plans or they want to see him come back in shape.

And Parnell just signed for 4 years. I believe the timing of that is key. Callahan has had time to study him and talk to Woicek about him and make this decision.

You know you can't make reasonable arguments here

Thse are great points BTW.

I think they are enamored with Parnell. It was no secret. He came in raw, but he flashed a lot of potential.

If you hit on Parnell, and can really develop him, that really frees you up from having to take tackles higher in the draft.

I think a lot of the emphasis we placed on offense last year is going to really pay off. We only selected 2 defensive players last year in the draft. And in free agency we really only brought in Elam and Coleman.

It sucked losing Robinson, we should have signed him earlier in the year, but I think if we overcome that, especially if Andre Holmes is what they think he is. I would like us to pick up a veteran at some point if we can.

Looking deeper at Callahan's resume

Became the Offensive coordinator in Oakland in 1998.

In 1997, Oaklands running game was ranked 23rd in the nfl. (im focused on the running element, because that is what most needs improvement). They had 9 rushing touchdowns.

In 1998 they moved up to 16th in the nfl. And by 1999 their touchdowns increased to 18. I skipped 1998, because I didn't want to admit that their touchdowns decreased from 9 to 6, but they did have a garbage running back. And they had QB problems.

I think we have the offensive weapons that Callahan usually doesn't have. All he needs to do is work his offensive line magic.

He turned Lincoln Kennedy into a pro bowler.
