BILL PARCELLS' 11 QUARTERBACK COMMANDMENTS

Tony Romo Reads Them Religiously

draft_lens2152696module11284246photo_1220313854parcells_romo.jpg
I went looking and found Bill Parcells' 11 Quarterback commandments, he shared with Tony Romo before the Dallas/Buffalo game in October of 2007, when Ed Werder talked of a list that Bill Parcells gave to Tony Romo.

A list so powerful, that Romo reads it at the beginning of every season and the end of every season. ESPN gave Bill Parcells a segment to divulge the contents of the magical scroll, and he presented his quarterback commandments.

1. Press or t.v., agents or advisors, family or wives, friends or relatives, fans or hangers on, ignore them on matters of football, they don't know what's happening here.

2. Don't forget to have fun, but don't be the class clown. Clowns and leaders don't mix. Clowns can't run a huddle.

3. A quarterback throws with his legs more than his arms. Squat and run. Fat quarterbacks can't avoid the rush.

4. Know your job cold. This is not a game without errors. Keep yours to a minimum. Study.

5. Know your own players. Who's fast? Who can catch? Who needs encouragement? Be precise. Know your opponent.

6. Be the same guy everyday. In condition, preparing to lead, studying your plan. A coach can't prepare you for every eventuality. Prepare yourself and remember, impulse decisions usually equal mistakes.

7. Throwing the ball away is a good play. Sacks, interceptions, and fumbles are bad plays. Protect against those.

8. You must learn to manage the game. Personnel, play call, motions, ball handling, proper reads, accurate throws, play fakes. Clock, clock, clock, don't you ever lose track of the clock.

9. Passing stats and td passes are not how you're gonna be judged. Your job is to get your team in the end zone and that's how you're gonna be judged.

10. When all around you is in chaos, you must be the hand that steers the ship. If you have a panic button, so will everyone else. Our ship can't have panic buttons.

11. Don't be a celebrity quarterback. We don't need any of those. We need battlefield commanders that are willing to fight it out everyday, every week, and every season, and lead their team to win after win after win.

I expect Romo will improve once more and improve upon a few more of those t hings on the list that he's not doing as well as he should right now.

I have faith in him. I know a lot of people have none, or lost all faith, but I believe he'll improve once more.

I really believe that Bill Parcells felt Tony Romo had a ton of ability but I believe Bill Parcells felt Tony Romo was young, inexperienced and maybe a little naive.

How can you blame Romo for being a "celebrity quarterback."

It's not his fault the media follows him around. So what if he's dating Jessica Simpson? Tom Brady is on far more celebrity publications due to his engagement to Gisele Bundchen, and look how successful he's been. I think sometimes people assume Romo is holding press conferences to discuss his personal life.

Romo's biggest problem is turnovers and execution. Hopefully we can get some discipline and accountability in the locker room next season and see who steps up.

That's my thing. I think the things that hurt Tony, and thus this team, the most are things that he can, and will, improve upon with every bit more experience he gets in this league.

Last year I was critical of Romo for being a celebrity. Not all of his being on People magazine is his fault, but I was tired of seeing pics of him clubbing with Jessica during workweeks during the season.

But to his credit, he toned that all down this year. So I'm not sure how you blame him for being a celebrity quarterback anymore.

But on the other points... Babe Laufenberg said last night on the radio that when he did his sit-down with Parcells from Saratoga last year, he asked him what was the last thing he told Tony as he went out the door. And it was that "You can't turn the ball over, son... You just can't do it."

Tony didn't listen. Maybe he simply can't help himself.

Nope.

Bill Parcells knew Tony Romo like the back of his hand.

I believe he compiled that list because he felt Tony Romo had great promise but was naive and being the Quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, success probably came a little to early for him to be able to handle it on his own.

If Tony Romo was in Miami, he would be even better than he is here because Tony Sporano is a better playcaller than Red Jesus and Bill Parcells wouldn't put with Turnovers and going to Cabo before a Playoff Game.

Tony Romo has no choice but to read the above list and learn from it.

Like I have stated many times, I DON'T think Tony Romo will last long in Dallas if these catastrophic events keep happening under his watch, whether it is his fault or not.

If it continues, you will start hearing things like "He needs a change of scenery".

WADE PHILIPS TOP 10 QB COMMANDMENTS

1 - When things go wrong, its my fault. Take a day off.

2 - When things are going well, its because you're great. Make sure everyone knows this. Take a day off to reward yourself.

3 - Football is important but so is life. Make sure you enjoy yourself with as many celebrity friends as possible, and if you stay out too late, well, take a day off. No sense practicing tired.

4 - Avoid contact at all costs, particularly in training camp. Don't practice too hard. If you do, make sure you take several days off to compensate.

5 - Interceptions are just like punts. Throwing them late in halves is relatively harmless.

6 - Training camp is a great way to get on camera for Hard Knocks. Make sure you spend as much time as possible working with the media guys to help you get endorsements.

7 - Your WRs will whine and moan about getting the ball to them. Make sure you pay close attention, and force balls into double coverage to keep them happy. A happy huddle is very important, even more imortant than things like points or winning.

8 - If the huddle is not happy, take some time off to regroup.

9 - If you are not getting enough rest before extremely imprortant playoff games, try vacationing in a different country. Its quite relaxing and will keep your mind off all that football stuff.

10 - Always remember rule #1.

I would put it the other way: That if the Fins had Tony Romo playing like this, they wouldn't be as good as they were this year Pennington, who turned over the ball, what seven times all season?

And let's not act like Parcells could make everything all better. Tony was the same guy when Parcells was here. Now our schemes here have stunk lately, and that's part of it. But Mike Holmgren couldn't beat the turnovers out of Brett Favre, and Bill Parcells couldn't beat them out of Romo. It's part of who they are as players.

Bill Parcells suffered from very medicore Quarterback most of the time he was here.

Who knows what Bill Parcells could have done with Tony Romo if he had him for a full season.

The Offense is not being fine tuned and is very predictable. No matter how much talent you have, if your Offense is banal and not evolving, teams will out scheme you.

I don't even want to imagine what Bill Parcells' presence coupled with Tony Sporano's ability would have done to with an Offense such as ours.

Tony's a failure on almost every one of those counts.

Parcells brought in two of those mediocre QBs, and they were guys he'd coached for many years before. Let's not act like he was some victim here.

And Parcells coached Romo every single day for the first four years of his professional life, probably the most important years of a QB's development. Would he only have started coaching the turnovers out of Romo once he became a starter? Were all those years of grooming for naught?

Not trying to pick on your post, Mick, but this is probably why I get (wrongly) labeled as a Parcells hater -- because people ascribe these miraculous powers to him. The things that go wrong wouldn't have gone wrong if he'd been here. And the things that are right are all due to him.

He brought Vinny Testeverde in as a backup.

Drew Bledsoe wasn't a bad short term option and one year we probably had the two worst Tackles in Football, with Rob Petitti and Torrin Tucker.

I think people really forget just how horrible the Cowboys were before Bill Parcells got here.

Also, it doesn't matter if Bill Parcells was coaching Tony Romo for 10 years, if he wasn't playing in games, at some point it really doesn't matter if the player you are coaching is not getting real game experience.

I just don't think you see the debacle we all saw yesterday if Bill Parcells is Head Coach.

He lost a year to Quincy and Hutch, and we don't know if Vinny was even really supposed to ever start, Quincy just smoked his way out of town right in training camp. When Vinny was done, Henson and Romo were clearly not ready yet so Bill again had to stopgap with Drew.

It would have been completely different IMO if Bill had been given complete control of the QB situation from the get go, not gotten saddled with Jerry's leftovers.

Sounds like Romo was even worse before all that coaching started. There was obviously a reason Bill took so long to pull the trigger on Drew.

That said, I don't disagree with you. Romo will always be turnover prone, its who he is. But that's livable when he throws 36 TDs to 19 INTs and quite frankly the OC or HC can and should put him less positions to make those mistakes - i.e. run the damn ball more. That's where Parcells probably could have protected him better than Wade or JG seem to want to.
