Gotta say I'm a little shocked by this, sure he was a trouble maker but Grantland and 30 for 30 made them a nice bit of coin.

Here is the statement from John Skipper:

“I decided today that we are not going to renew Bill Simmons’ contract. We have been in negotiations and it was clear it was time to move on. ESPN’s relationship with Bill has been mutually beneficial - he has produced great content for us for many years and ESPN has provided him many new opportunities to spread his wings. We wish Bill continued success as he plans his next chapter. ESPN remains committed to Grantland and we have a strong team in place.”

I'm not the biggest BS fan but really enjoyed his Monday pods with cousin Sal talking about the NFL lines, don't care where he ends up but they better not stop.

I more or less interned for Bill when I was in college (it wasn't an official internship). This was back in Bill's Digital City Boston days.

The one thing about Bill is he is incredibly smart when it comes to the media business. He has studied so many writers and the sort and he understands the big picture of business so well that I would be willing to bet that he could honestly tell you what his next steps are in detail and how all of the players will respond and how he will get what he wants.

My guess is he'll end up at Fox. Fox's HQ's are in LA which is important for Bill. They are not likely to restrict him nearly as much as ESPN (owned by Disney) did. They are also looking to compete with Disney and Bill is the only real draw of anybody at ESPN. I'm sure that Bill would love to get back at ESPN and John Skipper and knows that going to Fox would be the best way to do it.

I don't see Grantland surviving very well w/o Bill and Grantland is expensive to run. So now you lose the main attraction for Grantland and a money maker could turn into, at best, a loss leader. Meanwhile your competitor that paled in comparison now gains substantial ground on you. It would be tough for Skipper to explain to shareholders why he allowed that to happen and couldn't work things out.

I've heard some suggest he'll do his own independent thing, but that requires risking Bill's money and at a probable lower income and more work for Bill. Even if he has investors, he would be beholden to those investors and that wouldn't separate it much from the issues he had with being accountable to the ESPN execs. Bill knows that and I just doubt he'll go on his own or at least do it for a substantial period of time.

I really don't read or listen to Bill anymore. I do believe if he goes to a place like Fox, he'll go back to more of his Digital City style...less fanboy-ish. That was never his style anyway and I believe ESPN thrust that upon him. That may persuade me to go back to reading him and listening to him again.

Good Call on Fox.... They are looking for a way to get Fox Sports off the ground. The blueprint for sports1, & and its sister networks has been average at best.
They need an infusion of ideas.

He had Jimmy Kimmel on hid pod recently to talk about the Paq fight, I can see him trying to rasie his profile by appearing on his show to talk about this and returning to the Adam Corolla podcast to slate ESPN, looking forward to that.

I think "fired" is ESPN's spin.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/09/sports/bill-simmons-and-espn-are-parting-ways.html

The falling out has been coming since last year... I think they mutually parted... Simmons wasn't going to resign (unless the sum was ridiculous).... and they didn't want to resign him.

Fired is Dudspin's spin.

The firing has been going on for a long time, now. I don't think he and John Skipper get along anymore otherwise they would not have announced this with 4 months left before his contract runs out. That screams 'I can't deal with this guy anymore.'

Bill isn't the type of guy that responds well to editing and censorship. And he doesn't respond well to people resting on their laurels like ESPN has since they are the Worldwide Leader. Putting out a product means something to Bill, even if he's making money hand over fist.

I wonder what his true thoughts on the 30 for 30's are. Personally, I think there has been a noticeable drop-off in their quality. It's become more about fanboy perspectives than an actual documentary shot by brilliant filmmakers like Barry Levenson. It's more about 'The U' now and less about The Two Escobars. I can't imagine, deep down, that he's liked where 30 for 30 has gone.

The NFL has ESPN by the balls. They are deathly afraid of the NFL and the NFL treats the Pats like gold yet don't seem to care what BS ESPN pulls with the Cowboys.

This is because Kraft and Mara are the real powers within the NFL. Jerry could be, but he clashed with the NFL owners way back with PepsiGate and while he has somewhat recovered. He still seems to be somewhat of an outcast within the NFL ownership round table.

btw, it's not spin. The NFL probably asked ESPN not to renew his contract.

I don't think the NFL said one word to ESPN about Simmons.

The issue is that ESPN is owned by Disney and they are a very conservative when it comes to language.

ESPN is also very lawyer heavy and there's a lot of the lawyers getting involved with editing and censoring Bill and telling him what podcasts he can go on.

I don't like Goodell as much as anybody, but I think this goes well beyond him and any disparaging remarks that Bill may have made.

Read he wanted 6 mill a year and they didnt want to pay it. Not sure that qualifies as a firing.

If true then wouldn't they let him play his contract out? I think it was appearing on the Dan Patrick show without asking, but obviously I don't know.

You ever see the episode of Seinfeld where George was trying to get fired by the Yankees because he has something better lined up somewhere else?

That's what Bill Simmons has been doing the past 6 months.
