I for one am not in favor of running Parcells' out of town. I'm of the opinion that Hall of Fame coaches don't come around often (even though Dallas fans have been spoiled in that regard) and when you have one you hold on to him as long as you can.
But with that said, it may be in the long term best interest of the Cowboys if Bill Parcells retires. Best case scenario he comes back for one more year. Even if he does sign an extension he realisticly will not coach past next year. At that point we will have to hire a new coach since their is no heir apparent on the staff currently. (No, neither Zimmer or Payton have shown enough to warrant a look IMHO). With this in mind, what is the likelyhood that the new coach we would hire the year after next would run the 3-4 defense? Not very if you look around the league. This means we would have to transition back to the 4-3. Its pretty much understood that Greg Ellis and Laroi Glover are going to be moved in the off season because they do not fit in the 3-4 defense, so essentialy, we are removing 2 very good 4-3 defensive lineman who could be contributing members of a productive 4-3 defense for years to come, on the chance that we make it to and win the Super Bowl next year. It would be a shame to part ways with Glover and Ellis because they didn't fit our scheme only to switch back to a scheme which they fit perfectly in the next year. Spears, Canty and Ware could all fit into a 4-3 scheme. The same can not be said about Glover and Ellis into a 3-4.
If we could land someone like Capers as a 3-4 defensive coordinator then that changes things. Then even if Parcells leaves after next season we still have someone who could take over the head coaching duties who would utilize a 3-4 set. Otherwise the cost/benefit analysis would indicate that its not worth it. For what its worth, I also think Bill Parells ability to lure coordinators he would be comfortable with such as Dom Capers, will be key in whether or not he decides to return. Regardless of what anyone may say, he is clearly does not have confidence in Mike Zimmer and even less in Sean Payton.
