Last year the Chargers had 49 sacks as a result of a blitz, the Dallas Cowboys had a whopping 10. Pretty amazing stat in my opinion.

That's pretty standard for a Mike Zimmer defense. For a guy with a reputation for liking to blitz he can't design an effective one to save his life. And please don't blame it on Parcells, Zimrod was like this before Bill got here.

We are going to see a vast difference in the effectiveness of our blitzes and our pass rush in general.

According to STATS LLC, the numbers are 31 for San Diego and six for Dallas.

What's your source?

ESPN. Probably off as usual, knew I should of double checked it. Still 31 and 6 might be even worse. Less then 1/2 sack a game vs about 2 a game.

Averaging 2 extra sacks per game is like snuffing out two complete drives per game. That's a whole quarter of offensive production PER game. Wouldn't that be great?! Come on season, start!

Our blitzes were so well seen by the offenses that they never stood a chance. You would think that the coaching staff would have taken a cue from the defenses that were successful in creating pressure and doing some of those things that they did.

Most telling stat: Neither won the Super Bowl

Adam,

Can you tell me how many times each team (Chargers and Cowboys) blitzed? And/Or is there a percentage of blitzes over the total defensive plays that they show?

Thanks a bunch!!

Yeah, I thought he had posted it before.

I'll try to search for it.

EDIT:

Found it.

By the way, we blitzed 27.7 percent of the time on pass plays (151 out of 545). San Diego blitzed 41.9 percent of the time on pass plays (251 out of 599).

We also had 36 times when he blitzed and our opponent ran the ball (for an average of 4.28 yards). San Diego had 103 times when they blitzed and their opponent ran the ball (for an average of 4.34 yards).

So we blitzed a total of 187 times, while San Diego blitzed 354 times.

either way, it's a 5-to-1 ratio..

so what's the difference?

bottom line: we need more sacks.

This is true, But blitzing in my opinion is for teams with an overall weak defense, the logic is, blitz and get to the QB before he throws downfield for big gainers.

I dis agree with the way Zimmer called the Defense last year, but I don't agree on a blitz on almost every down.. a good Offensive coordinator will pick that defense apart!

That's strange. Because the teams that blitz the most tend to be at the top of the rankings.

An effective blitz is well, effective, unlike ours the last 11 years.

If you blitz a lot and get to the QB a lot then it is worth it.

I tend to agree... look at Philly... they load up on the blitz... but, they get torched at times, too... there has to be a nice balance to it.. .and unpredictability is the key... if everyone expects you to blitz, well, then they know how to counter you...

The nice balance is having an offense that can score.... which we had for the large majority of last season.
:D

So, in other words they blitzed a little less than twice as much as we did but had 5 times as many sacks? If we can have that type of success, this is going to be a very, very good season. Especially when you consider we have a better secondary thus, hopefully, limiting the big plays you can potentially give up.
