Blocked Punt Question

Against Detroit T-New had a punt return for a TD.

Yesterday Miles Austin returned a kickoff for a TD.

This got me to thinking about Special Teams. I am trying to remember and drawing a blank. Does anyone know how long it has been since the last time we blocked a punt? I ask because I really can't remember when the last time was that we attempted to block a punt with an all out effort before yesterday. It is something that has long troubled me because I see no reason not to send at least one person on every punt.

I don't have the answer.
But it is rare for teams to try and block punts anymore.
I guess everyone is afraid of RK penalty.

I can't remember either.....

The sad thing is that we don't even try....we try to just block the guys coming at the returner and we can't even do that very well sometimes....

It's a shame. We aren't going to send a guy to block the kick....we just want to stop them from getting downfield to get our returner and we have fair-caught quite a few balls.

the last one I can remember was done by Ike Holt...but that may not be the last one

It's been at least ten years.

I think I found the answer.....Ken Norton 9/13/92.

2002 at Tx Stadium vs Washington. There was a blocked punt and FG, but I cant remember which was done by which?

why is it so common for college teams to block punts, but not in the NFL?

Blocked punts in general are few and far between nowadays.

Wasn't that a Thanksgiving Day game. Didn't the Washington punter get his nose messed up?

Yup, broken. Their kicker punted from then on.

I remember that, it was none other than the immortal Markus Steele.

But even that one took the punter bobbling it for a while, or Steele never would have gotten back there in time.

And actually, wasn't the hog nose on a botched FG, when the punter was the placeholder? Because I think I remember Derek Ross actually recovering the Steele block, right on the sideline.

Talent gap probably. In college a lot of things work that won't in the NFL because a good team has so much more talent than an average team. In the NFL the talent level between a good and average team is much closer.

So Roy blocked it then? That was the last?

Good memory.

Man it sure seems like forever.

I remember Randall Williams blocked a punt in a preseason game and started to celebrate instead of jump on it in the end zone for a TD.
