Just to throw this out there because I was thinking about it the other day, but why do we never go for a punt block? It's a game changing play and could potentially help ignite rallies but we never do it, unlike the Jimmy Johnson days when special teams was a really important part of our success. I'd really like to see this more often. I mean, we rarely put on a decent rush. Is it because Bruce DeHaven is a conservative special teams coach? After all, he was the Buffalo special teams coach during Tennessee's Music City Miracle. Has that made him gun shy? Thoughts???

Typically its a risk that you take early to change/gain momentum or a desperate late attempt to get back in the game.

It can certainly swing momentum but by the same token it can kill you if you end up roughing or running into the kicker.

Personally, in the Pro game, I hate it because they more often then not seem to run into the punter......it must be easier to do in College.

NFL does not happen very often.

Very true but we seem to end up making some other bone headed penalties during the course of a game so at least this would be an effort related penalty if called which I could live with.

The Cowboys can't even get to the QB, and now you want them to automatically try and block a punt or field goal?

Because Parcels lives and dies by percentages. Percentages dictate that very few punts are blocked and when you commit to blocking a punt, you're basically giving up any chance at a return.

Parcells would rather get a 5-10 yard return every time than a 0 yard (or worse if the punt returner doesn't catch it) return with only a blocked punt every 50-100 attempts.

I'm not saying I agree .. just stating how Parcells thinks ..

Cuz the chances of blocking a punt are a lot less then the chances of breaking a big return.

IMO, if we have Newman back there, we should call a return. If we have anyone else back there, go for the block.

Instead of putting this on the Cowboys coaches as many posters tend to do with EVERYTHING, consider the fact that NO NFL team goes for blocks on punts very often. The reason is simple - history has shown it to have a low chance of success, it kills your chance for a return and it often results in penalties.
