Football is still at its core, a very simple game. It’s a game of fundamentals. Blocking and tackling remain the core skills that teams who win championships typically do better than those who don’t. Creative schemes and play calling have their place, but if you do not block or tackle well, you will NOT consistently win football games.

In 2015, Bill Belechick had this to say about the importance of tackling:

I put a high priority on it, we put a high priority on it in the organization in our defense. We practice it every single day. I don’t think there’s been a day that we haven’t worked on tackling this year or any other year. It’s the most fundamental, important thing for a defensive player to do well. That and defeat the blocks. Everybody is going to get blocked at some point, so defeating blocks and tackling, that’s the two most critical fundamentals that any defensive player needs. There’s not really much that goes above tackling for me.”

As we have watched this season unfold, almost every game this team has either lost or struggled in, the fundamentals have been shoddy. In this team’s last ten games (in which they have gone 3-7) the tackling stands out as most atrocious. The bears game was a perfect example of just awful tackling.

Whoever our next head coach will be, I sure hope it’s a guy who makes the fundamentals a part of constant emphasis.

Yeah, scheme and play calling matter. But the foundation of every good football team starts with the simple skills of blocking and tackling.

I love his comment about defeating blocks too. Even when this team has bee above average tackling, they've constantly and consistently struggled to get off blocks.

Richard said it's an emphasized daily now.

That will be an interesting aspect of Sunday’s game vs the rams. We really struggled getting disengaged with blocks in that playoff game last January. It sure would be great to see the first guy on the scene make the tackle for a change. That alone would give this team a better chance to win every week.

what makes it think the next coach will be a guy?

this is JJ land way through the rabbit hole

O-lineman today coming out of college leave a lot to be desired in blocking most just don’t look ready for the NFL. Tackling is a lost art it went out with the last CBA if you don’t practice it you can’t do it.

Goes back to your other thread....these guys don’t fear Garrett. Need a Jimmy to cut people if you’re out there missing tackles and such. That stuff would get cleaned up real fast. They aren’t doing any different drills than any other team,it’s all they don’t fear the HC. Imagine Parcells glaring at you coming off field after a Chi game like that? Ughhhh....no thanks.

Putting players in a position to make those tackles is just as important and this scheme is lousy at doing that.

I’m amazed at how poor tackling is, especially in HS and college. It’s a lot of grabbing and clutching while the ball carrier is still gaining yards. Rarely using their shoulder and rarely wrapping up. Tackling used to be about just taking someone out on the spot.

I love watching a team that can tackle because even if they aren’t as talented as their opponent, they will be in the game because of their ability to tackle guys on the spot.

Makes you wonder if we struggle to get off blocks because of fundamentals or is it because our defensive players are usually smaller faster guys who lack the strength to get off a block.

Yeah guys use to practice wrapping up and putting the ball carrier on his butt now they want high lights and don’t want to practice.

The difference between Belichick and his coaching staff vs Garrett and his coaching staff is immeasurable.

But..but..but...according to a few people here, Garrett is the bestest coach ever! Sunshine, clapping, happiness and positive thinking trumps fundamentals like blocking and tackling! (yeah, I couldn't keep a straight face typing that)
