Pithy musings from week three of Hard Knocks:
* Miles Austin is the man. Bit of a tangent: Back in our newspaper days, we covered him in high school. Weird: He was teammates with Luis Castillo (now with the Chargers). They both went to the same school (Garfield) as Wayne Chrebet. Tremendous athlete, incredibly nice kid. Bummer about his knee injury, because it seemed as if Austin was on the verge of maybe challenging Hurd for the No. 3 receiver spot.
[Possibly unrelated: We watch players like Hurd and Austin talk about improving and for some reason, we think of this article about Toyota. Baby steps. The slow and the steady. Nothing happens overnight. It is the standard-issue "read this" link we email to folks on the rare occasion that someone asks how to "build a blog brand." Anyway, it's nice to see a few wealthy NFL players not thinking 'get rich quick' and instead honing their skills on a daily basis.]
Maybe it’s the show, but in Owens, Crayton, Hurd and Austin, is there a better set of WRs in the league?
* If there’s a player, simply based on what we’ve seen on camera, we might end up root against, it’d be that Bennett rookie at tight end. Won’t tuck in a t-shirt? The guy’s trying to impress the coaches and earn some burn and he won’t tuck his t-shirt in? And the ego on him saying he was one of the best college football players in the country last year? Talent and performance are two vastly different things. Yes, the rip-job is warranted.
* When Campo was in the hot tub, and Wade walked out with a towel around his neck … did anyone else sort of wince and wonder if the two were going to get in there together?
* Terrell Owes and his flamboyant T-shirts continue: “I [heart] Haters.” That’s great.
* Peter King getting special treatment and eating popcorn with Jerry Jones. You know PK felt big-time yuckking it up on camera in the owner’s office.
* DeMarcus Ware’s also easy to root for, especially after revealing that he and his wife apparently can’t have kids, so they adopted.
* “I’m so frickin’ average.” - Tony Romo. Has to be the QB in the league we’d most like to have a beer with and play video games. Small town, small college QB goes from undrafted to elite? He’s a Favre-in-training, seemingly without the ego.
* WR Todd Lowber was on camera wearing a hat backwards … with both ears tucked in. Do non-teenagers actually do this?
