Blogging the Boys: Cowboys have only extended 2 first round picks, in 1st year of eligibility

The chart indicates it is 5 players.

Parsons is eligible and Smith is not. So could be 7 players soon.
2 were not offered extensions but returned to play another year or so.

The article is making it look as if Dallas drafted poorly when they have not.
It is very misleading, and pretty bad journalism. Then again we are used to misleading information here.

Smith is eligible. You are eligible after 3 years

1st year of eligibility this is for. Parsons was eligible last year and didn’t get the deal, so he’s now one of the misses even if he signs an extension soon

Why is there even a three year rule?

Shouldn’t teams be able to extend players at their own discretion?

If you manage that well you can keep a good team together and players get their money a little faster, even if it’s a bit less.

they were just mentioning how he's one of the ones who haven't been signed one of the top guys of his draft. Horn and Surtain to name a few have been signed, not sure what we're waiting on except clicks!!

I hate the FO but this is normal.

Only about 10% of 1st round picks are extended after 3 years these days.

Misleading title or might be that RJ Ochoa just doesn't know.

The problem is when you philosophy is to build thru the draft and it is your reasoning for not utilizing FA, you actually need to extend the players you draft.

Preferably not a week before the season starts to keep the headlines all to your little selves.

Likely keeps the cap under control.

While I agree that I would like to see Dallas be more aggressive with signing guys early the rest of the league data suggests they are not doing anything the other 31 teams are not already doing.

This data is from last offseason so its not 100% accurate, but since 2011 just 26 1st round picks have signed extensions before their 4th year. 7 of those extensions have been QBs.

Only the Rams have signed more 1st round picks early than the Cowboys as they have (Tavon Austin, Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, and Robert Quinn).

From most draft classes only about 50% of 1st round players will get extensions from the team that drafted them.

Well, we all know their logic is flawed. Having a sound strategy (or what one thinks is a sound strategy) and executing it to perfection are two different things.

I am sure auto designers had a sound strategy on the Edsel. Is our FO the Edsel's of the NFL?

Oh, no. I gave Coogie another thread idea. Wait and see.

Probably in favor of the owners.
Say you hit an early stud at QB. After his rookie year he could already have his agent requesting a new deal
Running backs have short life in the NFL. You get the next AP, they may want to do a new deal right away

It gives owners 3 years of cheap rookie contracts where the players are forced to play at a set rate, minus any incentives they get from the escalators.
