With Dan Quinn out in Covid protocol against the Texans opening drive. We were a disorganised rabble and I don't get why it hasn't been more talked about.

After 3rd and 5 stop at the one-yard line. The Texans make a quick substitution bring in a TE (85) and we are caught loafing unable to get out of our nickel package. It's now 12 personnel against nickel at 4th and 1.

This is poor....how are we not prepared?

The very next play it's 1st and 10 and we have 10 men on the field missing a LDE. Texans run it straight at the gap and go for 8 yards.

That is two mistakes in a row getting the right people on the field... high school stuff. And don't tell me we just wanted to practice a certain look....with 10 men.

At 2nd and 2 (four yards from the goal line), we line up in nickel with Kazee (175lbs) and Wilson (205lbs) our safeties, Lewis in the slot and they run it up the middle for 2 yards.

Are we putting our defense in a position to succeed....Never mind that four out of our five DB's are under six feet on a goal-line play....I can accept we are just getting reps into guys and not too worried about matchups. But us being in nickel at 2nd and 2 on 4-yard goal line play has to be another mistake doesn't it?

At 1st and 2 after calling a time out we come back out in a nickel package again! This time Kearse, Kazee, Wilson, Diggs and Brown our DB's. The Texans are in 12 personnel again and we now have Wilson lining up at RDE, Armstrong and Gregory stand-up edge rushers. Wilson predictably is washed out creating a hole for the RB to score.

How does this happen...We just had a time out! What are we trying to practice here? Nickel against 12 personnel two yards out from the goal is just setting up to fail. Having Wilson line up at RDE over a OT can't be a planned thing, can it? I get it is pre-season and Dan Quinn was a late out in COVID protocol. I also don't care about the result...it obviously doesn't matter. But this is the opening drive in our dress rehearsal and our coaches don't seem to know their lines.

After the number of blown assignments in Mike Nolan's defense last season, I wasn't happy seeing this, and I don't understand why this hasn't been a news story. Are Mike McCarthy and his team simply not working hard enough to prepare?

Last year we had quite a few!

I would not read too much into it. Maybe they wanted those packages on the filed to see how they do. As if a team was in a hurry up, and they could not substitute players. So see how it works.

if it was a real game, then they may have done it different.

Luckily the game was meaningless. Maybe it's the lineup on what the coaches wanted?

All I know its preseason and I'm sure that they will make the proper adjustments when come game time.

So were practicing substitution mistakes? There really is no situation where we should have nickel against 12 personnel on the field. I hope you are right because our defense wasn't prepared last season and that's one area I'm looking for improvement this season.

I highly doubt that's what the coaches wanted. We gifted them points on the 1st drive which obviously is meaningless in the context of this game but just can't happen in the regular season. I still have bad memories of the Packers game in the playoffs where Rodgers gave us lesson on the need to substitute with the right players and a sense of urgency. It was the game Butler drew that substitution penalty that had never been called before.

TBH, it's not like they've never made those mistakes in real games.

Can all of this be contributed to Dan not calling the plays?

I agree with you regarding that Packers game. Our coaches back them, Garrett included, never made any game adjustments. That's the marquee of a bad coach.

It may not have been what the coaches want. But Im sure they didn't plan for it. Hopefully, it won't carry over in the season.

They probably didn't have a contingency plan for losing their defensive coordinator five minutes before the game. I'll bet they have one now.

I imagine each coach has their specific duties during a game and they probably didn't have time to consider every detail when they had to replace the DC with another coach. So who performed the duties of that other coach?

And ten men on the field. Could it be the missing one had been escorted out of the stadium prior to the start of the game?

It was likely Dorance Armstrong not on the field (LDE). I’m with you. I’m hoping these mistakes are a good thing in that they get flagged in a meaningless game and rectified for when it matters.

They must have made game adjustments because they were in the playoffs. Unless you are saying they had prefect game plans up until then.

I'm right there with you, bro. This was inexcusable. Poor alignments and poor play-calling. Whoever was calling the plays and alignments on Quinn's behalf had best learn from this and not repeat the same crazy mistakes or it's going to cost us.

Joe Whitt Jr. is calling plays on defense once again. Oh, and Nuss is calling plays on offense.

Yep we suck. I say forget about the season and wait for the draft...

So your saying that the first drive the texans had after a turnover by the offense, and about 20 minutes after the team found out it wouldn't have it's DC was sloppy?

SHOCKING! someone stop the press and immediately investigate this problem!

Oh right, did you ever stop and realize that the texans didn't score again until after half time. And the number of mistakes went down after that first drive? I know facts suck, but maybe panicking about a pre-season game in which mistakes are made and then corrected in game isn't the best thing health wise.
