Previous Cap Thread put me in a brain storming mode....

If Jerry's as committed to winning as I think. If winning is just a little more important than near term profits, perhaps he'll consider this idea. Maybe even look at it as a long term investment to give the Cowboys a slight advantage over the next few years and more importantly, foster an enormous amount of good will with his current players............

We should look to rework most of our current contracts with a goal of maximizing the 2010 cash expenditure, while minimizing cap numbers in 2011 and beyond. One limiting rule I think is still in place is the 30% deal where base salaries can't change by more than 30%.

We would see some obvious and not so obvious benefits that I'll get into after covering a few examples/scenarios.

1) Can't miss star players with 3 or more prime years left. We should basically tear up their deals. I think this would accelerate the signing bonus they received into 2010. We then could give them a new deal for any number of years that made sense.
Lets say Romo has 3 years left on his deal. And the pro-rated SB is 4 mil a year and his remaining base salaries are 4, 5 and 6 mil dollars from 2010-2012. That would give him a cap hit of 8, 9 and 10 mil for those years.
Well if we tear up the original deal, the 12 mil hits in 2010. Now we could extend him a year and pay him 6, 4.2, 5.0, and 6.5 over the next 4 years.
It's a win, win, win.
We get a significantly lower cap# over 2011 and 2012, an extra year and Romo gets the money he was gong to earn 2010-2012 excellerated.

2) Over paid players in danger of being cut like Barber and Williams.
I don't have the specifics of their deals, but I'm sure both got big SBs and both have 3 or more years left.
We go to Williams and tear up his deal. Lets say he had 4 years left with salries of 5,6,7, snd 8 mil. And a pro-rated remaining SB of 8mil. So his cap number for 2010-2013 would be 7,8,9 and 10 mil.
We now get his 8 mil pro-rated SB hit in 2010 and give him a new 2 year deal with base salaries of 6 mil in 2010 and 5 mil in 2011.
We're now looking at a 5 mil cap # in 2011 instead of 8 mil and the likelyhood of keeping him is much greater.
What Roy gets is a little excelleration of his 2010-2011 salaries and a chance to be a FA in 2012.

I think this is within the rules. If it is we could get huge relief in potenial cap years going forward while paying our players a little more actual cash in 2010.
2011 may or may not end in a lock out. Even if it doesn't, paying our players extra money in 2010 should build/buy a lot of good will for Jerry.

Agreed.

I have said the same thing many times, that restructuring contracts could be the biggest gain of an uncapped year, NOT going crazy in free agency.

Wondering if anyone was ever going to respond to this thread....Thanks.

Do you know if what I was suggesting is within the rules?

Tearing up a contract to absorb all the remaining bonus in 2010 and redoing virtually the same deal paying only the remaining salaries.

Daniel Snyder restructures mega-contracts every single offseason.

It can be done.

that's a good question. I would think their's some rule that prevents teams from doing that.

Calling ADAM.

Is there any rule to prevent a team from doing this..........

Lets say Ware has 5 years left on his deal he just signed. And he received a SB of about 24 mil.

As I understand the rules, if his scheduled salary for the next five years is 5,6,7,8 and 9 mil. His cap number would be 9,10,11,12 and 13 mil. The salary plus 4 mil a year for the pro-rated 24 mil SB.

The plan is to tear up his deal so the remaining 20 mil pro-rated SB gets accelerated into 2010.
We them sign him to a new deal for basically the same salary he was scheduled to make from 2011-2015.

No change for Ware, but the Cowboys get 4 mil a year cap relief over the 5 remaining years.
