I missed the scrimmage. Anyone got any insights into the game? Big plays, impressive or not so impressive players?

Thanks in advance!

I'll just put my thoughts here.

DEz made a nice gatch on a go for a TD but was otherwise quiet. TWill can still win on the in and post route and was getting separation from Claiborne on them. The receiver depth is better than I thought it would be. Lucky and Butler did not play much but made some catchers. Lucky had a nice return on a punt drill. He has some nice wiggle without losing speed in space. Swaim Mayle Smith Brown Eagan Morris and both Smiths all made plays. Dak and Showers should have decent receiving targets between them when they come in during preseason.

Defense ran a fair amount of stunts and blitzes and other than Smith they did a good job clogging up the middle and passing guys off. Tapper seemed to beat Free a time or two. Green wasn't as bad as Broaddus would have me think. Mack was inconsistent and Witzman was beaten like a drum. With Green,Looney, and Leary on the second unit I can see the second string doing okay but look out if you're dropping back behind that third string line.

Rod Smith missed two blocks in a row in pass protection. That is a disqualifier if he keeps it up.

Traylor was missing blocks in the run game. Swaim was a favored target for both back up QBs. Gathers is showing an ability to get separation and catch the ball. His blocking technique is neophyte. He needs to play with bend and leverage but he looks lost technique-wise as people easily get under and inside his reach.

Romo looked to be moving around better than in the past two or three years. Seemed accurate and the deep ball to Dez was a beauty. Dak and to a lesser extent Showers seemed to be slow in their reads. Accuracy and ball placement both seemed to be plusses. No balls were being thrown up for grabs. Dak has better arm strength than I thought.

Depleted line performed rather well. Irvin, Poe, and Okoye were active against the run. Tapper got into the backfield and the backup lines struggled to contain Irvin who had a very good showing.

Lee was making tons of plays. Nzeocha flashed a bit. Would like to see more plays from Hitchens. Morris and Muamba also showed up on the radar with tackles and pressure sugaring the A gap amongst the deep end.

Carr looks stockier than the lean look he has had in the past. Got beat on a stutter go but was very physical at the point of catch defending passes. Olatoye had tight coverage as did Brown who even better exhibits plus ball skills. Brown is a very good all around athlete, run quicks and jumps. They had corners playing S at the end; Swanson managed to be around the ball.

On Dez's long TD, Church was shaded to Dez's side of the field, no one was running in the middle of the field, and Church remains sluggish such that he was nowhere near the play. Heath was finding his way around the ball playing up which is an improvement over years past. Frazier gave up a completion to Swaim in the middle of the field who was having a quality scrimmage getting open.

Defense played a lot of zone so early return is that the man robber scheme of Henderson's is gone with him. First string could tighten some windows but Romo was very accurate which can dominate even good zone play. Overall instincts seem lacking. Successful zone coverage needs to anticipate throws and drive on footballs. Criticizing Scandrick as cheating for doing that in years past made me want to slap Broaddus.

I also was very please to see tackling drills where they put their shoulder on the belt, wrap the legs, and try to put the helmet on the ball. Seattle started doing it with Carroll and we seem to have picked it up last year. First time I've seen them drill it. Limits helmet to helmet contact, although with some offensive players dropping their heads that is sometimes hard to avoid. Helps turn the ball over too

- Team needs to start looking for a FB like right now. Rod Smith does not appear to be that guy. Never really understood his value to the team. Would not surprise me if Clutts is brought back in a few weeks, which actually is pretty sad.

I don't remember the overall number, but it seemed Irving might have had like 4 sacks, although a lot of that was against the 2nd and 3rd string offense.

I've been wondering about the fullback. I know it's not a big priority but I'm with you on Smith. I know Kuhn is 34 but I thought he would of been an upgrade but it doesn't matter now because he signed with the Saints.

Fwiw, this is the best scrimmage report detail I've seen anywhere.
