Schembechler collapses, dies at 77

DETROIT -- Former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler has died, television station WXYZ is reporting.

He was 77.
Schembechler collapsed Friday during the taping of a television show and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

He became ill at WXYZ-TV in Southfield the day before the Ohio State-Michigan showdown, the station said. Schembechler also was hospitalized Oct. 20 after falling ill at the same studio.

Earlier Friday, Southfield police spokesman John Harris could not provide specific medical information, but said: "I don't think it was good."

Police were sent to the station about 9:25 a.m. with the city's fire department, and they escorted an ambulance to Providence Hospital, Harris said.

Messages were left with the university, Schembechler's office and the hospital.

Schembechler met with the media this week to discuss Saturday's game between the No. 1 Buckeyes and No. 2 Wolverines. He also talked about the device that was implanted to regulate his heartbeat after he was hospitalized last month. He said the device covered about half his chest, and doctors still were adjusting it.

Schembechler said he did not plan to attend the game in Columbus, Ohio, and he doesn't go to road games anymore.

Schembechler had a heart attack on the eve of his first Rose Bowl in 1970 and another one in 1987. He has had two quadruple heart bypass operations.

The seven-time Big Ten coach of the year had a 194-48-5 record at Michigan from 1969-89. His record in 26 years of coaching was 234-64-8.

This will probably give UM added emotion for this weekend's game. You know how they play on those things... right or wrong, they do.

Emotion will be high at the start of the game but once you get past the 1st few series it still comes down to execution by the players. Emotions will not win you games execution will.

Coincidence?? Foil hat wearers of the world unite!!;)

Not that I'm one of those, but this is so weird... the greatest coach in the history of the school passes on the eve of the biggest regular season game in its history (at least recently). What are the odds??

If I were an OSU fan, I'd be worried that the cards were stacked against us.

Hate to disagree with you and start an argument in this thread, but your wrong on this. I can speak from personal experience. When I was in high school our 3rd string QB died doing some yard work with a neighbor. Two days later we played Everman for what basically amounted to a playoff spot. Now, my school hadnt been to the playoffs for football in over 30 years, and hasnt since. My school also hadnt beaten Everman in football for over 20 years, and hasnt since. However, we went out there that day fighting like dogs. All our wristbands had his name on them, we were holding them in the air, saying RIP in the huddles to each other. We used it as fuel the entire game. And we won, 7-6 with a blocked field goal on the last play of the game. We made the playoffs and subsequently got destroyed in the first round. But, there is no doubt emotion carried us to that win. Every year, we go 6-4 or 7-3. We beat everyone but Brownwood, Stephenville, and Everman, and lose out on the playoffs by that one game. Somehow we did it that year. It was emotion.

Emotion only last if players are executing. I have seen guys all hyped up at the beging of the game and can't maintain it because they are not making plays

Right. Too much as stake for this game. OSU will be prepared for a fired up emotional UM team. Tressell is one of the best for preparing his team for all scenarios and hype.

RIP Bo.

This is the biggest Ohio St/ Michigan game ever ... and all of them mean something. So I doubt either team has a problem with bringing enough emotion to the field.

Now how each team is able to channel those emotions could be another question altogether.
