The defense at Washington was fun to watch. It looked like Marinelli opened up the playbook with all the blitzes and coverages they used. I don't think they have disguised, with all the late shifting, their looks as much as they did on Monday night. Our safetys would line up and then at the last second bail out of the box or shift from a 2 deep look to a single high. They used both a 4 man line and the 3 man line they showed off against NE earlier in the season. I think their gameplan was to make Cousins decipher the defense and then force him to make the right decisions to beat them instead of playing conservatively. There were a couple of plays when it looked like Cousins hesitated which caused an errant throw and a couple of plays when he found the correct match up and made a play.
Here are some of different looks we used at Washington:
BLITZES
I don't think we have seen as many blitzes from our defense since Rob Ryan was calling the plays. I wonder if Marinelli opened up the playbook because it was such an important game or if he finally feels comfortable with the personnel to employ it. Probably a little of both. The gameplan was aggressive and I thought the disguising and mix of blitzes and coverages was largely why we were able to keep Washing to only 16 points even with the 3 turnovers from our offense.
5 man rush withMan coverageandZone coverage- This was the most used blitz against Washington. A single high safety with a 5th rusher. It was usually Lee or Church being sent after the QB.
Zone blitz- Marinelli usually uses this blitz a couple of times a game where be will bring a LB/DB from one side and then drop the DE on opposite side into coverage.
0 blitz- I don't think I've seen Marinelli use an all out blitz since he has been here. We were lucky the ball was overthrown or it would have been a touchdown. That was the only one called during the game.
COVERAGE
With all the blitzing we able to take advantage when we were playing coverage by showing pressure and then backing out.
Cover 1- This is our primary coverage. Jones playing center field and man underneath. The coverage on the play was good and Lawrence took advantage with his second sack of the game.
Cover 2- We were in a Cover 2 look for only a few plays but it was just another look our defense threw at their offense
Tampa 2- This is a good example of the disguising the defense was doing. Right before the snap it looks like some sort of a single high with both LBs in the A gaps with the slot CB looking like he is going to blitz. At the last second the Church backs out and then the defense goes into the Tampa 2 look. Pressure from Hardy forces the ball out to the RB.
Prevent- There a few plays when Washington was in a 2nd or 3rd and forever situation and we were in a prevent defense.
I think a lot of us, including Gruden in the commentary box, were surprised at all the blitzes Marinelli was calling. It was aggressive but in the end paid off. I don't know how much blitzing Marinelli will call at Lambeau but it gives teams something to plan for.

Other notes
- Collins didn't have a great game in pass protection.Gif 1,Gif 2
- Lee is a great player and he put on a display showing off his speed, sideline to sideline range, blitzing, openfield tackling, etc.
- McClain has been quietly playing well the past few weeks and it has improved our defense. On this play, from the endzone camera, look at McClain truck Crowder who is trying to block him.
- Claiborne played well coming back from injury but putting him on Jackson was a very difficult assignment. We really miss Scandrick's speed, among other things, to cover receivers like that.
- It looked like Marinelli did not want Reed to beat them, especially on 3rd down, because there were times they doubled him with a Safety and CB, both Safetys, and even on one play had Church and Hardy covering him.
- Dan Bailey is the best kicker in the NFL and people got to see it on Monday night.
