As pregame warm ups wrapped up prior to Monday night’s victory over the Lions, Jason Witten had to make a detour to the midfield star before heading to the locker room. That’s because Witten and his family were joining a Hall of Famer for a special pregame ceremony.

For the 6th time in his 14 seasons in Dallas, Cowboys fans voted Witten as the winner of ‘The Bob Lilly Award’ which recognizes a player’s sportsmanship, dedication, leadership and achievement.

The award’s namesake, Hall of Fame defensive tackle Bob Lilly, was on-hand for the presentation and was joined the Witten family including Jason and his wife, Michelle, and their sons C.J. & Cooper, and daughters Landry & Hadley.

Lilly is known as “Mr. Cowboy” because he was the first-ever Cowboys’ draft pick, as well as the first Cowboy enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor. And Mr. Cowboy has an idea for next year’s award presentation.

“We might want to call it ‘The Jason Witten Award’ because this is his sixth time to win ‘The Bob Lilly Award’ and, of course, he’s very deserving,” said Lilly. “I watch him not only catching passes, but I also watch his blocking. That’s a very, very important position to be able to stop the defensive end when you’re trying to run off-tackle and to pass protect.”

Pretty cool. Witten deserves every positive thing that gets said about him as a football player.

As a football player and as a man. I know most do not look at athletes as role models but Jason is clearly that not just a great player but a person who kids can emulate on and off the field
