It is a terrific year for running backs. Devalued position or not, Gurley and Gordon are expected to break the two-year drought without a first-round running back. Moreover, the depth is so attractive that scouts anticipate finding a solid back in the third or even fourth rounds.

In order for the group to fulfill its lofty promise, Big Ten ball carriers must perform beyond the stereotypes scouts generally associate with them.

"What do Big Ten backs in the (past) have in common?" one personnel man asked. "They've all been inside, power-type guys. They're runners, not pass receivers. And they don't pass protect."
