Based on the experiences of other service academy players drafted by teams, Cardona in all probability wouldn't be available full-time for football until the 2017 season.

"Right now it doesn't look like he'd be able to play this year or next year," an NFL special teams coach said. "He'd come to training camp while he's on leave from the Navy and do that for a couple years. Then his third year try to get reinstated to play."

Another special-teams coach said there was significant need for capable, cheap long snappers across the league. There just might not be need for a player who can't play for two years.

"Even if they give him a waiver, they can call him at any time," a third special teams coach said. "They could call him right in the middle of the season and all of a sudden you lose your guy.

"And, we're kind of in a wartime situation now. I wouldn't mess with it."

If he is quality and cheaper than JP, I think you go for it. I wouldn't worry about his "availability".
