Bob Sturm Blog: Football 301 – Decoding Garrett – Week 7

Can we atleast criticize the uttter lack of utilizing Choice more while we have had week after week of injured backs?

not really...this week we ran up over 400 yds, scored on 6 offensive possessions, won the game and the passing game was working more than the run game

also, it wasnt like Choice didnt play...he just didnt get carries...and in the Denver game where Choice got more of the load, he was made into a non factor

In case you weren't paying attention, Sturm himself has been critical of Garrett. Much like the fans, he roasted Garrett over the two fades versus Carolina.

I didn't say Garrett was doing a perfect job.

Thom Brennaman's call on Austin's 59-yard TD catch has to be among the worst calls ever on a touchdown play that long.

LOL, i thought that too. I like Brennaman but that was brutal, it was like there was a 5 second delay or something. Austin already caught it and he's saying romo going for the home run.

Well, I hope I am wrong, but as wet and cold weather marches in later this season, I think we will see that our running situation has been horribly mismanaged and costs us more than we can seee now.

How so?

Even though Austin is attracting the safety, and Williams appears to be in a 1-on-1 situation against press coverage, Romo still tries to fit it in to Austin rather than look Roy’s way. A perfect demonstration of how making plays gives you more opportunities to make more plays. Romo makes a perfect throw and it is a big gain, but I wonder if they asked him why he didn’t take the 1-on-1 in the film room.
If no coach asked Romo that question, that's actually a good sign. For the whole team.

Not only that but Barber and Deon Anderson absolutely blew up some blitzers in pass blocking. Again, Choice is probably our least effective blocker in the pass game.

Interesting you say that, because I think Felix is the least effective blocker. He's gotten better, but I still have concerns for him there.

Choice has been quite solid every time I keyed on him on blitz pickup.

In the ATL game, they all did really well though.

Felix has looked bad some but Choice has had issues identifying his man at times. They hardly ever ask Felix to pass block at all. He probably whiffs just about least of anyone because they usually just send him on a pattern or take him out. Neither Felix nor Choice are physical blockers. Choice mostly just gets in front of guys and Felix mostly just dives at legs.

Barber is by far the best at it. He really lays into blitzers.

In the ATL game it was mostly Barber on blitz pickups with a few by Deon Anderson. Deon was in on almost pure pass protection schemes. Those 240 pound guys doing it is probably why it went so well.

I'll try to take notes next game so we can talk actual data. :)
