Letting Murray go did not make the team better. After going 12-4, creating a hole over cap space is worse than overspending.

Dez is the type of player to re-sign and the 10/114m/20m guaranteed was insulting. He is not the type of WR that will fall off quickly. He is not a top end speed guy. But he can still overpower CBs and outrun FSs.

My view hasn't changed on Murray. He's soon to be a declining player and wasn't worth the investment.

Who says that contract offer to Dez that you're posting is or was legit?

Not really. Most players never see the end of their contracts.

There's a difference between the player not seeing the end of his contract and the club getting stuck with a bunch of dead cap money or having negotiated a more realistic contract where the final cap hit is minimal.

This team couldn't continue to give out stupid contracts like it did to Marion Barber and Roy Williams and Jay Ratliff... and they've apparently learned their lesson.

RW11 hurt hte most considering the draft picks that were also given up in return for his garbage time inflated stats

The Cowboys will give out more bad contacts in the future. That's the nature of the beast when you pay 53 guys.

We were unlucky that we had a bunch of them clustered together.

But yes.... It is nice to see more restraint. To that we can drink.

Pass the blue label Jerrah.

It makes me optimistic about the future of the team. That is, post-Jerry.

We are operating in a sound and long term successful manner. You must give an elite QB his money. After that you have to pay your LT the going rate then your edge rusher if elite plus going rate on disruptive DL. I can argue at least one maybe two CBs and a ballhawking FS. You must have a good Mike and Will but they aren't that expensive. That's assuming you can actually find all those to have to pay. The rest of the team you need good players and good depth.

That's the key to a long term successful club IF you're also willing and able to draft replacement for those positions. Plus get lucky drafting good+ players elsewhere.

Drafting well and fiscally sound cap management sprinkled with some luck are the main cogs; along with an elite QB.

Playing hardball on contracts is going to cost the team a player or two along the way.

But in the long run it's going to benefit by not giving out bad deals.

Keeping in mind this team can control Bryant for the next two seasons regardless what the Bryant camp wants to believe.

This is the way to do it. Control the one or two elite players on your roster with the tool built into the CBA. The other part of the equation is have a very strong scouting department to keep turning over every rock in order to find replacements for the players you know could possibly leave via free agency. The simple fact is, you can't pay everyone elite money especially when you have an elite quarterback that has the highest salary on the roster. I would like to pay Dez, but not at some ridiculous contract that turns into an anchor after the first few years.

What's the first to go?

Oh yeah! The memory.

Welcome to old-age pops!

I never supported that deal. It was a ridiculous contract.

That's nice to say now. Some will believe you. Those that keep score know you have never criticized a Cowboys move as it happens. It's only years later when you can spin it as change for the good that you'll acknowledge a mistake.

I think you have perhaps the most bent selective memory of anyone on this board. I also see you rarely own your statements when they are wrong and that's plentiful on both counts. l see you go after people and their opinions and when their opinions are correct you disappear.

I find you tiresome and boring. I'd like to see you stop mocking the team and members but I suppose hell will freeze over first.

Give me a break.

I know which Cowboy moves I applaud and which I jeer.

That was a jeer.

Being the penny-pincher I am, I jeer just about every long term contract the Cowboys gave out sans with rare exceptions like Tyron Smith's and in the past Kyle Kosier's.

Some contracts I'm ambivalent on such as Sean Lees.

But many such as the final contact to Emmitt Smith, the last contacts to Larry Allen, Flozell Adams and Barber all earned jeers from me.

Again it his "all or nothing" mindset. Nothing is part-way or sometimes this or sometimes that.

Personally I would find that mindset rather limiting.

A bit of it is amusing when directed at the team. I appreciate that as even mocking humor has its place and some is funny as hell. I don't believe it is all or nothing thinking but purposeful but perhaps I'm wrong. The rest of it just annoys and occasionally pisses me off. I see him contribute in a positive way and it's always insightful and thoughtful which makes the rest so much more tiring. I'd do this in a PM as I normally do for most instead of publically but I already have in the past so I won't waste my time.

And I'm finished here as it is just as unfruitful.

It does kinda suck that now that we're actually good, we're not going to pay for these guys. But then again, one of the big reasons we're good right now (and projected to have a good roster for a while) is because of this philosophy change. I really do hope we make an except for Dez and splurge on him a bit... not Megatron money, but the next plateau down from that would be fine.
What's funny is Dez actually deserves that money more than Calvin because he's more reliable, CJ can out jump 3 defenders for a td but then miss the next 3 games.

Both are great players
Neither deserve that type of money.

Dez will eventually get paid very though

The Cowboys' organization has evidently entered a new era in its determination to become fiscally sound with respects to its prosperity under the cap. Stephen has gradually taken on a more involved role in the shaping of their philosophical and financial policies. Apparently, that has been for the betterment of both the organization and the team. Greatly eliminated are the days of overspending and poor talent acquisition to make room for far more intelligent spending and astute recognition of talent.

Additionally, within approximately the same time frame, the culture of this team has undergone a dramatic about-face as well. The Cowboys' coaching setup with its current overall staff is arguably about as good as it has been at any time during this team's modern-day existence, imho.

My most fervent hope for the continued success and well being of this franchise is that JJ and Stephen would see fit to promote Will McClay to GM before another wise team beats us to the punch. It's surely no amazing revelation to recall Jerry's absolute refusal to do so in the past. Nevertheless, perhaps the time is at hand for such a monumentally dramatic decision to be forthcoming. Such a previously unthinkable move might easily turn out to be one of the most beneficial decisions ever to grace the team. It's a pleasant thought, if nothing else.
